2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
12oz bottle in a teku while listening to the cool music - much better than the Series 1 music. Pours black with a beige head. Aroma of light tartness, dark malts with a little roastiness, some dark fruits, and light funk and light floral hops. Flavors don’t really blend all that well. Average texture. Sort of weird and could have been done better.

Not a fan of this beer. It’s like eating those warheads candy.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
bottle. Deep brown with small head. Very malty base. A bit of tart funk in the palate, but the focus is on the roasted malt. Doesn’t really work for me.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Funky roasted malt aroma. Dark black body with thin lasting head, think tan lacing. Flavor begins like a light saison followed by roasted malts and a bitter chocolate, smokey aftertaste.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from BOTW. Somewhat dull black with a low, fine head. Malty, slightly roasted nose, chocolate, coffee, some saison-like spiciness and orange. Spicy yeast flavor with dark roasted malts and light citrus tartness. Very thin body and somewhat watery. Doesn’t really work imo.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 oz bottle, date stamped on neck as bottled in July 2013, served in a Belgian snifter.
This hybrid ale poured wth a minimal tan head over a clear, very dark brown body.
A number of odd hybrid coming out lately, some of which seem questionnable or prove to be less attractive than the conventional components. This "schwarzbier / saison hybrid" sounds like it might fall in this group, but Stillwater succeeds in making a compelling case for this particular innovation. The saison side, being a more powerful variety anyway, does dominate the black beer, but doesn’t enitrely mask its sweet dark roasted character. I found the result to be less challenging and easier drinking than an average saison. Certainly more complex and interesting than the average schwarzbier.
Feel: medium+, lively carbonation in a medium body.
