India pale ales harness the inherent flavor characteristics of hops to bring forward familiar flavors of pine, resin, spice and citrus. In some cases, those botanicals are so potent, they exactly mirror specific edibles. Such is the case with Centennial hops, which hail from the Great Northwest and come across on the palate like a mouthful of citrus fruit. The sensation is amplified with this, the first beer introduced via the Stochasticity Project, a double IPA brewed with Centennial, Chinook and Magnum hops as well as an immense dosing of fresh grapefruit peel. The result is over-the-top bittersweet grapefuit intensity that is at once refreshing and bracing in its citrusy bitterness.

On at Capone’s. Poured a golden color with a small sized head. Citrus, grapefruit, pine, and lighter caramel. Definite grapefruit / rinds.

Tap at 23 Beerz. PRetty orange-gold color. Rather faint, unconvincing nose of grapefruit and honey. Sweet flavor, seems to have some diacetyl, flavors of grapefruit and honey. Heavy. Just ok. Quite a disappointment.

Hazy amber with a foamy off-white head. Aroma of light grapefruit, grain, and caramel. Tastes malty and semi-sweet with mild bitterness and a hint of grapefruit peel. Medium body. I expected this to be a lot hoppier and grapefruitier.

Bottled 1/23/14, poured 2/18/14. Appearance: Deep gold, almost orange color. Perfect clarity. Half finger of fluffy white sand head sticks around. Not much lacing. Lot of carbonation streaming from the bottom. (4.5/5) Smell: Hopalicious. Pine and grapefruit, surprise surprise. Smelling really fresh. Pleasant as hell on the nose. Not a huge depth of aroma, but this doesn’t need it. (4.25/5) Taste/feel: The feel is the first thing I notice, and good God, that’s nice. A creamy sort of medium mouth feel with a moderate carbonation that mellows out the somewhat harsh hoppy, grapefruity bitterness. Big grapefruit up front with a bittersweet finish of pale malts and hop resin. Not a legendary tasting sort of beer, but the mouthfeel definitely bumps this one up a tick. Incredibly easy drinking. (4/5, 4.5/5) Well done. There’s an awesome balance here. The hops are heavy, but mellowed by the nice amount of malt and smooth mouth feel. Bitter one second, sweet the next, though I’d overall say it’s more bitter than sweet. Another great one from Stone. (4.25/5)

Bottle. Moderate grain and light bread for the malt, moderate to heavy grapefruit for the hops, moderate soap for the yeast, with date, pineapple, coriander and a hint of pepper. Head is small to average, fizzy/frothy, white with spotty lacing and good legs. Color is sparkling clear medium amber/orange. Flavor starts lightly sweet and lightly to moderately acidic, then the extra long finish is moderately acidic and heavily bitter. palate is medium, oily with a lively carbonation. Beyond the citrus-y hops the added grapefruit peel is quite noticeable.

2014-03-21. Crisp bright orange body with a small white head that fades. 3+ Aroma of resiny pithy grapefruit, alcohol. Flavour is pleasantly bitter, grapefruit, resin and alcohol. Finishes relatively dry and bitter. Bitterness lingers. Average bodied palate, pleasant carbonation. Lovely and quite enjoyable but fairly simple. Bottle shared by Blankboy
