3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bomber. Bottled 1/29/14. Wow, another old hop-forward ale for me. I swear, I meant to buy these beers fresher. Aroma is grapefruity, burnt caramel. Pours hazy cantaloupe with a medium off-white lacy head. It actually tastes like the bitter pith of a grapefruit. Tastes old, unappealing. I know it says to drink fresh, but shit, this should still be drinkable after a couple months. It barely is. Maybe this was delicious when it was fresher. Itís not right now, though.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a clear golden color. The head is a little over two fingers high, and off-white in shade. Its texture is very rough, (rightly) suggesting its well hopped nature. Retention is good, too, and plenty of lacing is left behind.
S: This brings a lot of piny, herbal bitterness, with a touch of caramel malt sweetness. There are even touches of grapefruit candy. It takes a bit of effort to find the grapefruit peel, but itís there. Having said that, itís a great ítypicalí DIPA...then again, this is pretty much Ruination + grapefruit peel, so how bad can it be?
T: The opening flavor is a mix of sweet caramel malts and some peppery hops. Give it a bit of time on the palate, and the advertised grapefruit peel appears fairly vividly. Hell, the finish is a bit candied as well. The combined malt and grapefruit character make it surprisingly sweet on the palate - especially by Stone IPA standards - but this helps to mask the bitter bite fairly well. Even still, the bitterness does its damnedest to poke through everything else, especially once it warms up. This is pretty damn enjoyable.
M: This isnít the most drinkable IPA on the market - or DIPA for that matter - but it feels somewhat soft on the palate. Soft yes; light, no, not really. A combination of sweetness and hop resin lingers on the palate quite strongly. Carbonation is kind of mild, also.
O: The pretentious label is pretty much hiding the fact this is merely Ruination with grapefruit peel. Who cares? Itís not like Ruination is a bad IPA, and the grapefruit peel gives it a nice candied note that takes the edge off the bitterness somewhat (but also makes a bit sweet for me: I honestly couldnít drink a lot of this stuff). Like I said, itís just really damn enjoyable.

Poured from bomber into a snifter glass
Appearance Ė The beer pours a hazy orange amber color with a small fizzy white head. The head fades very fast leaving just a trace of foamy lace on the sides of the glass and some island of bubbles on the surface of the brew.
Smell Ė The aroma is massive of a sweet grapefruit smell as might have been expected from an IPA brewed with grapefruit peel. Along with the grapefruit however are some aromas of a malty and sweet nature of lighter tropical fruit smells and some more biscuit like aromas. Other hop aromas are there as well, with a bit of dank pine and some grass rounding out the aroma rather nicely.
Taste Ė The taste begins with a drier cracker taste mixed with a big grapefruit hop flavor. There is however some sweetness with a bit of tangerine and a little bit of caramel and peach. While quite dry up front, the taste dries out even more as the flavor advances with a loss of the sweeter peach and caramel and even more bitter grapefruit coming to the tongue. Other hop flavors of a pine and hay nature come to the tongue more toward the middle and the end of the taste. A boozy flavor all the while develops on the tongue as these flavor transitions take place. In the end, with all the flavors that end up coming and going from the taste, one is left with a quite grapefruit bitter, somewhat resinous, and boozy dry IPA flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel Ė The body of the beer is on the average side in terms of its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average side as well. In light of the drier and huge grapefruit hop flavors, the body really shines as it accentuates these well all while not overdoing it as to make them too overwhelming (which they are on the brink of..).
Overall Ė Big of a bitter in grapefruit taste with a slightly drier flavor overall. While not one I would want to have over and over again it was an interesting try as it has a strong but quite drinkable grapefruit bite.

10/10/2014: Stone Grapefruit Slam IPA... Golden-copper color with an off-white crown. There is some suspended sediment. Grapefruit peel, honeycomb malt, slightly soapy. The flavor is soapy grapefruit, slightly floral, toffee malt; ample bitterness (although itís very earthy, something just isnít sitting right with me and itís not going down well right now), but maybe not sitting well with me for the style. White grapefruit flavor and bitterness definitely dominates. Medium-bodied, slick and oily. This beer is MUCH better fresh. I enjoyed it the; now, not so much. Iím actually fairly disappointed and this beer is not making me feel well. I donít think I can finish my share (bottle split 3 ways)... 22 fl. oz. bottle.
