A deliciously creamy stout in the Irish tradition. This deep, coffee-colored beer has the aroma and flavor of chocolate, roasted oats and coffee with a rich tan head. Specially brewed for Trader Joe’s.

Formerly brewed by Goose Island, late 2010/early 2011 saw this beer’s production move to Gordon Biersch.

pours with a tan brown head that dissipates too quickly. Clarity is fine and the color has a nice burgundy undertone. Aroma is low with a hint of chocolate an no hop aroma. Flavor is more of chocolate malt than of roasted barley with a good solid flavor of oats. Very little character from the yeast, but does have a nice touch of acidity. Light mouthfeel. All in all,it isn’t a great beer, but its mild character, drinkability, and price would make it a good choice to add to a cooler full of brews at a casual get together.

Bottle. Pours dark brown color with a thick tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, some coffee and grain. Taste of Roasted malt, dark chocolate, with oat and just a bit of coffee. Mild bitterness and a fairly dry finish. Full body, thick and creamy with a subtle richness. Enjoyable beer.

From 12oz bottle, from Trader Joe’s, about $1.17 for single bottle, around $6-7 for 6-pack

Aroma: sweetness, not coffee but maybe cream

Appearance: black, somewhat clear, nice tan colored head

Taste: Medium sweet, light bitter

Palate: full body, creamy texture, average carbonation, bitter dry finish

Overall: More chocolate than coffee. Very sweet. Not a bad Oatmeal Stout. Nice body and head. Roasty and malty with some good bits of chocolate in there. Very silky and rich in flavor. Would have liked a little more aroma, but it’s a fine stout. Pretty solid Oatmeal Stout. Good value beer.

I was surprised that I like this beer as much as I did. It seemed to get everything right, great flavor, great balance, and a real smooth feel as you drink

Deep dark hue with a caramel head. Very sweet with notes of chocolate, toffee, and roasted coffee. Not bad.

Amiable looking old chap on the label. Pitch colored brew with a quickly-disspating light tan head. Aroma has some coffee acidity, lots of roast, some bittersweet chocolate and slight black olive notes. Sweetish, some coffee, roasted bitterness up front. Middle gets a little vacant. Acidic chickory finish, unevenly bitter aftertaste. Slightly heavy body, mouthfeel is initially slippery and then breaks a little fizzy. Fair. TJ’s, Tallahassee.

Tallahassee, Fl - Trader Joe’s - 12 oz bottle. Licorice black pour with a thin beady khaki colored head. Aroma has some licorice accents, a touch of creosote. Solid stout flavor, a touch of licorice, some espresso, a hint of creosote in the finish. Nice, chalky mouthfeell. Pretty decent and a great price at TJ’s ($1.17).

UPDATED: NOV 30, 2014 12 oz. bottle from TJ’s. Roasty, yeasty nose. Dark chocolate, smoky roasted malt flavor with a smooth slightly bitter finish. Light and dry rather than sweet. Not too rich or bitter with a nice malty undertone. All in all a very tasty, drinkable stout that strikes a good balance on several levels. I like the 5.2% ABV. Also a super value for the price.

Bottle: Black with a small tan head. Dark chocolate, milk aroma. Taste is mildly burnt chocolate, cream. Pretty roasty......with an ashy/peat bitter. Pretty good.
