3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
pours with a tan brown head that dissipates too quickly. Clarity is fine and the color has a nice burgundy undertone. Aroma is low with a hint of chocolate an no hop aroma. Flavor is more of chocolate malt than of roasted barley with a good solid flavor of oats. Very little character from the yeast, but does have a nice touch of acidity. Light mouthfeel. All in all,it isn’t a great beer, but its mild character, drinkability, and price would make it a good choice to add to a cooler full of brews at a casual get together.

2.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Dark chocolate brown with a tall tan foamy head that disappeared surprisingly fast. Malty but balanced with a hoppy bite. Hints of chocolate and espresso but everything is overpowered with and earthiness that borders on unpleasant.

For the money, you can’t do a lot better than the store brand beers at Trader Joe’s, and a six-pack of Stockyard Oatmeal Stout is as good as any six-dollar six-pack you’ll find. This beer pours chocolate brown with a crackling, foamy head. There isn’t a lot going on in the nose, but I did pick up on something like espresso. I love oatmeal stouts for their chewy, filling body, but I have to say this one is light and crisp compared to my favorites of the style. In terms of body, this is more like a Guinness or even a Murphy’s Irish stout. The flavor does close with a rich cereal malt, though, and some chocolate. I had a glass of this with a slice of carrot cake and I didn’t have a complaint in the world.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours dark brown with a light tan head that fades quickly to very little. Aroma is roast malt, mild oatmeal and a bit of chocolate. Taste is similar; roast malt, slightly earthy bitter hops, oats, bread.
Some carbonation, dry finish. A reasonable, but unmemorable, oatmeal stout.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
This is a good, solid stout from Trader Joe’s, nothing fancy. I wouldn’t consider it a sweet stout, it’s actually a dry Irish oatmeal stout. I didn’t know that JosephBrau was part of Gordon Biersch, this used to be made by Goose Island a few years ago. Nice appearance, dark brown nearly black with a tan head. Aroma is roasted grain, coffee, and earth. Nice balance of sweet and bitter, slightly sour. Medium body, creamy texture, average carbonation, smooth finish.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a dark opaque black with a smallish tan head mostly dissipating. Nose is malt and coffee. Fairly creamy on the palate, the taste is a nice combination of dark roasted malt, coffee, a hint of chocolate with a slightly dry finish. A well down stout that pairs well with brats and burgers on the grill.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 oz. bottle purchased from Trader Joe’s in Glen Ellyn, IL., and poured to a Czech-pils glass, displaying a darkest brown color with some ruby highlighting, brownish tan, bubbly foam to the head, and curtainy cling to the lacing. The aroma was roasted, malty, with a touch of cardboard, back of the freezer scent, a bit of molasses, baker’s chocolate, and left on the burner/day old coffee. The taste was similar notes, with the light cardboard persisting, some tanniny astringency, medium, earthy hop bitterness, and lively enough carbonation to project these latter notes well enough to tickle the tongue. Medium+ bodied, with some creaminess to the mouthfeel, and a finishing dryness. Highs & lows, with some potential.
