A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. Vertical Epic 02/02/02 was not brewed "to style". Instead, we tried to create something new. It’s triple-ish in nature, with wit character, coriander and orange peel, and has way more hops than either a Belgian triple or a Wit would. Belgian yeast was used. Belgian Strong Ale is the closest category that fits -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing CEO. In addition, we are pleased to provide the homebrewing recipe: http://stonebrew.com/timeline/020202
In 2002 we began our groundbreaking, millennium-inspired series with Stone 02.02.02 Vertical Epic Ale. This bumped up Belgian-style wit—made all the more alluring thanks to an infusion of orange peel, coriander, a sprinkling of black pepper and a healthy dose of Centennial hops—was a bright way to begin this epic eleven-part vertical tasting.

651 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, off white head, with extensive Belgian lacing over a clear gold (SRM5) body, ....nose is orange, coriander, floral tones, wheat, light pine, non-specific spice, slight egg white with the amalgamation of the other aromas....taste is wheat, slight orange sweetness, coriander, becoming dry, finishing with sharp black pepper, moderate pine, resin, grapefruit peel, hop bitterness.....mouth feel, medium body, moderate alcohol, medium carbonation with mild astringency. The black pepper is a bit high in the finishing taste, whereas the orange, coriander and wheat are large in the aroma. As it warms, the balance between the various ingredients becomes more even, making for a better beer. BJCP 7/3/14/3/7

Bomber. Spicy Belgian yeast aroma with notes of orange, coriander, wheat and black pepper. Pours clear golden colored with a thin white head that has decent retention but little lacing. Starts with wheat malt flavors with mild non-citrus fruitiness and orange citrus. Finishes quite dry with Belgian yeast, pepper, coriander and a slight amount of hops to finish it off. Quite nice.

Aroma and flavor is bananas/bubblegum, Belgian tripel yeast and a mix of spices, hops and alcohol in the finish.

Encore series picked up over the weekend at the COOP... Pours crystal clear golden with a long lasting white head... Thick Belgian yeasty notes remind me much more of a BSPA or triple than a big witbier... Orange zest is there, but is lost in the thick sweet esters. Happy I never traded the farm for an original, $8 is plenty.

Slightly hazy golden color, moderate head, good lace/retention. Aroma is coriander, orange, pale malt. Medium bodied, dry finish, it’s probably closer to a Tripel than a Witbier - but Belgian Strong works. A few years ago I had an opportunity to pick up a bottle of this for $300, I’m really happy I passed that up because it was $8 today lol.

Draft. Pours gold with a white head. Light peachy yeasty base, some floral notes, zesty citrus, mild bitterness, and a dry finish. Pretty good.

Bomber from BevMo. Bottled 7/22/16. Clear hazy golden in color. Some orange to it as well. Yeasty nose with a little spice as well. Yeasty up front with a pretty big hop bite for the style. Some spice and a touch of grain. A little bit of grassiness. Tastes like and imperial Belgian pilsner.

22 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass. Clear gold with a white head of foam. Good retention. Yeasty and doughy aroma. Moderately floral. Some lemon notes. Bready and moderately dry taste. Medium body and lower carbonation.

Draft. Poured clear copper color with an average frothy off-white head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy hop, citrus and yeast aroma. Medium to abundant body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy sweet & bitter flavor with a medium sweet & bitter finish of moderate to long duration. My expectations where surpassed.

(From the 2010 release) Floral and orange notes on the nose. Pours a clear light golden with a huge white head. Light floral notes, some spice notes, and a very light body. The alcohol is very well hidden, and there’s a nice dry finish. Very enjoyable, and I’ll be grabbing a couple of bottles to toss in the cellar to see how it holds up.
