COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around we used some unmalted wheat, just the right touch of Kaffir Lime Leaf, and a really cool Belgian yeast. The result is a bit like a strong Biere de Garde / Saison-esque influenced beer coupled with some aromatic Bavarian Hefeweizen style phenolic banana esters, and a backnote hint of lime from the lime leaf.

22 ounce bottle at the Relentless Thirst Gathering in Richmond, VA, 8.29.09. A totally unintentional 2100th rating. Cool. Pours a clear golden amber color with a thin head. Syrupy honeyish aroma with spicy and nutty notes. Taste is honey, bread, peppery spice and leafy notes. Also some toastiness and fruitiness. Medium bodied,

Murky golden orange, yeast is powerful in the nose along with big bananas and apricots, and even some coconut and sweet bready apples. Bright and sweet apples and cake flavors, really too sweet but very nice.

Bottle. Pours with a hardly any head and a deep golden body. Aroma of raisins, bread, honey and berry. Taste is baked bread, berries, oxidation, banana and must. Tickling carbonation and a water like mouthfeel. Still quite good.

This beer is a rich yellowish-gold color with a medium thick white head and fair lacing. The aroma is very kinetic - spice, yeast, banana and hops abound. Medium-bodied, with a flavor reminiscent of both a Belgian and a strong Hefe. Citrus, spice, hops and bananas all vie for attention. There is almost too much going on in the flavor. Spicy alcohol and sweet fruit and yeast in the finish. I liked this one substancially more than the 03.03.03, but I think it would improve a bit with more age.

DocLock (7824) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 16, 2004
Pours turbid orangish with a John Madden sized white head. Aroma just like a bier de garde aroma, with citrus, malt, hops, some fruit, florals, peat, and slight lime. Tastes citrusy, dry, very bier de gardish, with a final dry, slightly sour burst of citrus, lime, peat, and banana. Good complexity and well hidden alcohol.

UPDATED: NOV 27, 2005 Kaffir lime leaves and citrus zest create an enticing perfumy mist over the ample malt background...Wheat is apparent and plays off the lemony spiciness quite effectively...A curious novelty ale which caresses the tastebuds pleasurably for a while but gets a bit tiring towards the end of the glass...A très spicy lifestyle...

Golden body, smallish white head. Aroma is familiar but I can’t place it, perhaps the yeast? Triple like, slightly sweet aroma with some alcohol pushing its way to the front occassionally. Flavour is sweet witha vague touch of something like lime and mild spice. Palate is smooth, but a touch light. Very nice beer that might have scored slightly better with a bottle to my self.

Bottle at RBESG Grand Tasting, August 2005. Gold colour. Is it just me , or does this just have too much going on without a clear underlying theme to draw all the strands together? It has a big citrus rush that I put down to the hops, but perhaps the kaffir lime leaves have a role to play there. Something spicy going on? perhaps that the kaffir lime leaves too? Lots of estery tropical fruit that I didn’t think integrated perfectly and left the whole a bit sweet for my taste. Not a bad beer at all, just not as awesome as I had expected. Unfortunately, too much anticipation can get in the way of appreciation.

Clear deep golden color with a frothy white head. Aroma of pale malt, a touch of Belgian yeast, and plenty of peppery coriander spice. Nice sweet malty and candi sugar flavor at first, turning more dry and spiced toward the finish. Pretty well balanced, but could use some aging, which I guess fits well with the theme.

Light golden yellow pour with a thin layer of creamy head. Aroma was quite complex, with some floral notes, bananas, dough, and wheat. Very nice hefe-twist to a Belgian strong! The banana came through with a wheaty backbone. Lime was also lightly present in the flavor. You don’t usually find these alongside the Belgian yeast. Finish was somewhat dry, and carried through some yeasty bananas. This has mellowed out since the release, and certainly for the better!
