A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around we used some unmalted wheat, just the right touch of Kaffir Lime Leaf, and a really cool Belgian yeast. The result is a bit like a strong Biere de Garde / Saison-esque influenced beer coupled with some aromatic Bavarian Hefeweizen style phenolic banana esters, and a backnote hint of lime from the lime leaf.

I really wanted to like this more, but I couldn’t get past this medicinal/ jello flavor. Starts very bright citrus, and then gives way to an aftertaste that reminds me of fruit "flavored" candies. The banana is quite a bit to me, with a band-aid hit. Smells really nice, and for fans of the hefe flavors I’m sure quite nice. At least it isn’t boring, and well worth a try, even if not my cup of tea.

Quick thankyou to Kook for lobbing this one back from the U.S., amongst others. Served up at backyard patio temperature at a small tasting here in Perth.
Sunny orange-gold with a bad case of the ’sea-monkeys’. Good, solid, creamy white head formed that held and laced well. ’Ajax’ and bleach singed the nostrils first before a burst of concentrated orange and lemon juice attacked what was left. A plastic, yeasty, solventy and woody, nutty palate prevailed in the mouth not quite coming together. Is this supposed to taste so chemical, I doubt it!. It is extremely dry but heavily draped in acidic citrus fruits, very bitter on the peak of the swallow and yeasty into it. Body is smooth, not big but viscous in a way it overstayed its welcome. I really need to try this one again, it doesn’t quite work at all. (1 pint, 6 Fl.Oz, age unknown)

Aroma of caramel and herbal. Taste was caramel, herbal and mint. Past it’s prime, footbalmed.

Sample from a 22oz bottle. Clear yellow orange gold color. Minimal khaki head. Some orange citrus floral nose. Kind of bigger body. Lighter but kind of pronounced carbonation. Light sour, mild bitter taste. Yeasty, bit medicinal? Not digging it

Bottle @ RG 21. Caramel with floaters. Smells syrupy and molassesy. Tastes a little off at this point. Light;y bitter.

Bottle, RBESG 2005 Grand Tasting. Strong aroma, verging on the unpleasant, with notes of oak, brown sugar, lime and molasses. Flavour is oaky, alcoholic and too sweet, with notes of lime and lemongrass in the background. Not a love affair for me this one.

Served in a Stone Vertical Epic glass. Dry and bready. Medium body. A touch of yeast spice, but mostly just taste like bread. Meh.

UPDATED: JAN 29, 2013
Location: Bottle at Nerd Beer Epic Weekend, 1/25/13

Aroma: The nose is OK, but pretty dull, with some malts, yeast, and a little cardboard
Appearance: This one pours an orange color with an average sized head
Flavor: Taste-wise, it really falls off, not only is it kinda dull, but it has oxidation on the finish
Palate: The mouthfeel was not bad, but nothing special, light-mid body, and not the best finish
Overall Impression:  With the 04.04.04 we really got what we were expecting to get with the 03.03.03, but after that one was such a pleasant surprise, I thought we might be for a really nice vertical. Unfortunately, this bottle was less then stellar.
