A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around we used some unmalted wheat, just the right touch of Kaffir Lime Leaf, and a really cool Belgian yeast. The result is a bit like a strong Biere de Garde / Saison-esque influenced beer coupled with some aromatic Bavarian Hefeweizen style phenolic banana esters, and a backnote hint of lime from the lime leaf.

Bottle to Chimay glass. Cloudy dark gold pour. Looks great and a surprising amount of carbonation for the age. Bready aroma. Taste is amazing especially for the age. Very fragrant and flowery lime flavor dominates. So good. After a few sips the farmhouse and bittering hop qualities start to make their presence known. Very impressive how well this held up.. Iíd buy a pint of it on tap tomorrow.

Not overly sweet, mellow banana bread flavor, some kinda spice taste. Good rich hefeweizen. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at Liberty Station. Pours hazy gold with a fizzy white head. Tastes like dry herbs, light lemon, boozy. Light/medium body and low carbonation. Smells like dried fruit, light herb, light lemon, a little boozy.

From notes. Tasted on 12/12/12 from a capped 22oz bottle with Curtis, and the Nashville crew. Pours hazy bright orange with a minimal white head that quickly disappears. The nose is showing pretty heavy nutty oxidation, touch of banana, very malty, almost smells like a coconut curry. The flavor is very interesting, lime, coconut curry, tons of caramel malt, and banana yeast, but showing quite a bit of the same nutty oxidation from the nose. The body is medium with average carbonation and a long malty banana and curry finish.

Opened a bottle in 1/1/2015. Decent carbonation. Little aroma. A lot of oxidation but still drinkable. Sugary sweet. Lime is hardly apparent.

On tap at the Escondido brewpub - Blonde amber pour with a filmy white head. Odd minty note with sweet tropical fruity notes. Pear and overripe banana. Pineapple juice. Taste is pineapple, honey, sweet malt, and a sticky sweet finish. Slick with a thin body.

Bottle pour @ the 21st Richmond Gathering. Light amber with a small head. Nose is pretty damn oxidized. Apple juice and cardboard. Attic dust. Perhaps a touch of lime citrus. taste is not agreeable. Rotting apples and cardboard. Some honey. medium body, soft carb. Way past its peak.

Draft at stone co store. Clear gold pour, white head and lacing. Smells old and decaying. Cardboard, garbage, cloves, overripe banana. This is the banana cream pie you forgot about too long but then ate anyway out of remorse and self punishment. Taste: sweet up front. Floral, sort of like banana perfume. Twist of faded lime. Dry empty finish. Palate: body is fullish, but texture remarkably thin. Oily with lively carbonation. Overall: only $3 for this 4oz pour which I appreciate. Perfect example of a beer that is too old. Sad.
