Flavor is bitter all the way with a strong finish - has a smoky, burnt, bittersweet chocolate flavor. Mouthfeel is a tad watery and lightly carbonated. sliffy (2012), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 5, 2006 Bottle on the eve of the 060606 release: Dark red pour with a medium light tan head that faded quickly. Aroma has dark fruits, some spices. Flavor, more dark fruits, some roasted notes, a touch of chocolate. Nice full mouthfeel, a little warming from the alcohol. This is doing pretty well right now, but I don’t know if it’s got another six and a half years left in it. hellomynameis (794), Mayer, Minnesota, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 5, 2006 I quite enjoyed this one. Has that red/amber/orange like colour that seems to be previlant amongst west coats beers. Pretty tall fluffy coarse head that was mostly white. Nice belgian yesty aroma that gives of the cursory dark fruits and lets slide some spice. Mostly, I noticed the advertised clove (my nose isn’t too good). I liked how this tickled my tongue with its lively carbonation. This wasn’t quite thick and chewy, but had a good body to it. Sweet flavours with some caramel, a bit of roast. Certianly there are dark malts in here, with some more spice notes glkaiser (1182), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 5, 2006 Dark red color with a good head. Aroma of belgium yeast and some definite spice aroma comes through. Smells a bit like light ginger and maybe licorice. Nice roasted malt taste comes out, especially in the end. A bit metallic and extremely earthy malt in the beginning. It’s an ok beer right now...but hopefully will improve over a few years(not sure about that though...). I won’t be tempted to have another for a few years. eaglefan538 (2405), Wilmington, Delaware, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 3, 2006 Poured a amber-brown color with some red edges. The head was somewhat disappointing, but the lacing decent. Aroma was spicey (not added though?) and yeasty (enjoyable). The flavor was spicey, and dark fruit-like with the yeast coming through pretty strong (pretty much like a dubel). The aftertaste was bready and yeasty (slightly bitter from the latter). Enjoyable, but perhaps better if aged. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | May 24, 2006 Had planned on saving this and trying to get the entire series. As it’s unlikely I’ll live to 12/12/12, may as well drink up. Besides, not all years have been banner ones, so what the hell. This is a clear dark brown with a frothy tan head. Citrus zest, caramel, hints of chocolate, and other, fairly typical Belgian vapors meet the nose. Medium body has lively carbonation. The flavor was fairly common Belgian strong ale along the lines of what one would get from Famtome and the like. Maybe by 12/12/12 it will be better. Damned if I’ll know. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 15, 2006 Updated: Aug 12, 2006Clear dark ruby brown pur under a small collapsing tan head with no real lacing. Aroma of brown sugar/molasses, dark fruits, and a hint of licorice. Rich and thick mouthfeel with a lingering fullness but without any stickiness. Multiple flavor levels start off with sweet malt notes of caramel and molasses. There is a bit of roastiness, and some earthy flavors, and some alcohol stars to come through as well. Raisins, plums and similar fruit flavors are more in the background. Finally, a bit of spiciness leads to a a finish that is initially a little sour, turning to a light bitterness. I really liked this, and it became more enjoyable as the drink progressed. Silphium (2160), Haslett, Michigan, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 10, 2006 Deep yet translucent red-brown body, medium dense tan head. Caramely, toasty aroma, with hints of brown sugar. Alcohol and bitter esters begin the flavor profile, with notes of caramel and toast that linger with the strong esters, which carry through the flavor profile. Toffee and chocolate are also evident. Outside the malt contributions, there is little depth or complexity to this beer. The yeast adds little character to the beer. Not bad, but disappointing.
