Bottle. Pours dark brown with reddish highlights and a large fluffy beige head that mostly diminished. Aroma is dominated by sweet molasses maltiness and spicy, dark bready yeasts. The alcohol is subtle but noticible among the dark fruits and other scents. Flavor is best for me when room temp, sweet, fruity and spicy like a mulled hard cider with raisins, prunes and a splash of brandy poured over thick, yeasty bread. Medium to full body and creamy carbonation. I like this one now, but I’m looking forward to experiencing it as it ages and mellows a bit.

UPDATED: MAY 10, 2005 Re-rate 5-9-05. After having another one I have to say this is growing on me.Starting to suggest a cross between Rochefort and Hacker Pschorr Weiss Bock. Odd, but it works. Original rating-Chestnut colored brew raising a 1/2 inch tan head. Nose is yeasty with some alcohol heat. First sip makes me think of a juiced up hefe, all banana and clove. then it settles into some rich maltinesss that doesnt quite fill things out. Almost like a rochefort light. Still a decent brew that should make it another 7 years(hopefully).

UPDATED: MAR 14, 2006 Appearance: Nearly opaque dark ruby red, you can just barely see through it if you hold it up in front of a light. A moderate offwhite head, mild lacing.
Aroma: A light candied plum, a dash of spices, belgian yeast, light roasted malts.
Flavor Profile: Rich but not too thick, structured flavor profile of fruitiness, which is candied plums, bananas and I think dark cherries. A little sweet, but also supported by some matching roasted malts, a little bit of hops and some complimentary sugary chewy belgian yeast. A touch of cocoa and earthiness aftertaste. VERY nice brew.
Palate: Thich like all of stones fine brews, weighty, but refrains from going overboard. I’d put its weight on part with the arrogant bastard.
I imagine when this baby ages it will be one of the greatest blended beers ever concocted by the hand of a man.

Bottle: Dark ruby, fairly clear, monsterous beige head, foamy, fantastic lacing, lively carbonation. Very bready nose, cloves, subtle pepper. Yeasty, light sweetness, cloves, subtle raisins on the tongue, a bit of anise as well. Seems a quasi Belgian, Tripel/Dubbel combination. Not as sweet or fruity as others in the same style, but certainly tasty. Full to moderate body and mouthfeel. Clean finish, lingering anise, cloves, and bready. Somewhat earthy without being musty. While Belgianesque, the sweetness and mustiness is missing.   Otherwise, tiz fairly good!

UPDATED: SEP 4, 2006 pours a dark brown with a hint of crimson red peeking through.very lovely aromas of cloves,brown sugar,yeast,and malts.the flavor boasts much of the same.id say this is the best vertical yet.very sweet but well rounded.excellent stuff indeed.
RE-RATE:5/15/06.the beer is more balanced now then when it was fresh for sure.lots more chocolate,palate is smooth and the alcohol is well hidden.i think ill up my rating on this one.RE-RATE:lots more chocolate,although the mouthfeel is fading a bit.

UPDATED: JUN 7, 2005 Best Vertical Epic yet. Creamy, smooth dark mahogony with an epic lingering head. Gingerbread and raisin make up most of the aggresive aroma. Plum, cinnamon, yeasty bread, nutmeg, and a little Coca Cola make up the flavor. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth. Aftertaste lingers with sweet Coca Cola malt and spice then blend with dry wood. Rerate 060705: This time I get a lot of semi-dried banana, like the chewy chunks you can get at Trader Joes.

Aroma of the malty spice and hints of chocolate. Dark brown body, good off wihte head with lots of lacing. About the head the fisrt beer poured head diminished to a fine layer over beer. Second glass from 22oz bottle the head settled to a small one on top of beer. Flavor was of roasted malts and alcohol to start with. At the finish the spice and rich flavors of candy appeared. Great beer. May have to get another one of these.

Dark red pour, almost brown. Thick, creamy head. Cherries in the aroma, with a little yeast. Malty, with more cherry and astringent, tangy yeast. Reminds me of cherry cough medicine with edgy carbonation. Lots of alcohol on the finish. Quite muted and funky. I thought it might have been a bad bottle, so I opened my "save till whenever the hell I’m supposed to open all of these things" bottle to find that it was exactly the same. This is probably the last bottle of "EPIC" that I burn $7+tax on.

Dark brown, almost black with a nice thick off white head and lacing.
Aroma is sweet malt, over ripe fruit, alcohol and just a touch of chocolate.
Sweet malt and alcohol flavor with roast and spice as the beer warms.

I like this beer. It’s very different for Stone. It reminds me of a toned down Flemish Sour ale, w/ other added flavors. Dark reddish brown, with nose & flavors of sour cherries, the head was a nice off brown.There are some complexities in the flavor that I bet will come out w/ age.
