COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A new Vertical Epic will be released every year, with the goal being to collect them all and have a Vertical Epic tasting once the final Epic is released on 12/12/12. Each new Stone Vertical Epic Ale will be release one YEAR, one MONTH and one DAY apart. This time around, we used no spices in the brewing of this beer. If you've tasted the beer before reading this, that may surprise you. The special Belgian yeast we used adds a distinctively spicy aroma and flavor. Roastiness, clove, hops, fruitiness, and those other great and funky phenols abound in the nose. What's in the flavor? You certainly get some dark roasted malts and alcohol overtones. What else? Hints of earthiness, chocolate/cocoa, hop spiciness, maybe even anise, and ... the incredible variety of complexities from the classic brewing ingredients of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, when applied with an artistic brewer's talent never ceases to amaze.

thanks to secret santa (JPDIPSO i think) pours a deep ruby red with a small slightly brown head. aroma is slightly fruity and spicy despite the fact that they say they used no spice in this beer there is a light malt and yeastieness that is like. taste is much of the same with a bit of roastiness. damn fine beer. it is a shame i will probably never have another.

On tap at the Escondido brewpub - Pours mahogany with a filmy tan head. Nose is big Belgian yeast, lots of dark bread maltiness, and a dark fruitiness. Taste is the same, warm alcohol with lots of yeast, cherry, raisin, dark malt. Smooth and well-carbonated.

Bottle pour @ the 21st Richmond Gathering. Deep brown with a small head. Nose is roasted apple. Caramel. Chocolate and nutella. Some nuts. A bit earthy. Some leather. Taste is full of knackered chocolate. Old used towels. Cardboard. Pepper. Full body, soft carb. Meh.

Bottle @ RG 21. Auburn. Smells like dry pla-doh and chocolate. A little smoother.

Draft at stone company store. Ruby/brown pour, clear with ring of khaki head. Some lacing. Aroma: figs, molasses, grains steeping on brew day; bread, banana laffy taffy, licorice. Taste: cardboard and chocolate/toffee. Actually the oxidation in this isnít bad -- more sherry than cardboard, with a backdrop of raisins. Lightly sweet up front, but otherwise pretty dry. Full- body, creamy, good carbonation. Overall: this ainít bad. It ainít bad at all.

"Sweet leaning, but not overly slow. Some signs of oxidation after 7 years, but not spoiled. Hints of clove and other Belgian-y spices going on, and some non-descript dark fruit and a hint of alcohol. Definitely a gimmick to sit on these for 12 years, especially since you can make a couple car payments by selling them. Iíve never had a bottle of my own past one year, and I donít think most of the VE releases will be better than fresh after 6-12 months anyway..."

On tap. Pours a cloudy dark amber with small off white head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is faint chocolate malt and brown sugar. Medium mouthfeel with rich cocoa and brown sugar with nice lingering dry finish.

22oz bottle - The Epic Ales series have been up and down, and Iíve had several chances to try most of them at different times in their aging lives. This one really carried itself nicely and seemed much better now than when fresh. Aroma is light chocolate, musty, spicy and yeasty. Light canned fruit also creeps in after it breathes a bit. Toffee, spicy/gingery, light mint, with a nice showing of sweetness. Nice to see it holding up, while others havenít.

Bomber from Odeed. Nose is caramel, anise, black raisins, and sweetness. Clear brown with a medium beige head. Flavor is lightly sweet, darly fruity, and small hints of bitter and licorice. Very well preserved for a nine year old beer.

On tap at Tribes Alehouse. Pour is dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is of toffee, caramel, earth, and yeast. Flavor is similar with a bit of cocoa, dark fruit, and spice added in. Awesome.

At 2014 Most Arrogant Bar Bash (Barleys in Greenvillle,SC) Pours black and opaque, with a good head. This slr shows obvious barrel aging effects, including a smooth feel and well blended flavors. Itís warm with an estery finish and aftertaste; otherwise the high ABV is well hidden. Flavors include vanilla, toffee, dried fruit and light spicing. Semi-dry finish.
