COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As with any good epic, herein lies the promise of larger-than-life experiences, heroics, and twists and turns as the adventure unfolds. This bottle conditioned ale is chapter five, and is specifically designed to be aged until sometime after December 12th, 2012. Provided you can wait that long. At that time, enjoy it in a "vertical" tasting along with its ten Stone Vertical Epic Ale brethren. Each on unique to its year of release. Each with its own "twist & turn" in the plot line. Each one release one year, one month and one day from the previous year’s edition.

In this year’s edition, you’ll notice a deep, rich aroma of toasty malts, anise, Belgian yeast spiciness, and a hint of cedar. The toasty, dark and roasty malt flavors combine with a soft palate - courtesy of specialty dark wheat and barley malts. The body is fairly light for a beer with such a high gravity. There is a pleasant, lingering bitterness, so you know it’s part of the Stone family. This ale was brewed with a specialty Belgian yeast that we’re really liking here at Stone...it’s the same one we used for brewing the Stone 03.03.03 Vertical Epic Ale. And as with the Stone 05.05.05 Vertical Epic Ale, all the spicy, deep, and wonderfully funky aromas and flavor characteristics in this beer come as a result of nothing more than malt, hops, water and yeast!

22oz bottle, dark brown color, with some reddish highlights, and a bubbly beige head, with a belgian fruity, yeasty, chocolatey nose, with some dried raisin, date, fig, prune juice esters, and some chocolate granola bar, oat soft cookie, chocolate wafer, chocolate pudding accents, with some cheastnut, light molasses, chocolate, roasted, toasted malt notes in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a mild fruity, spicy belgian yeast, chocolatey, fruitcake, chocolate wafer, dried raisin, date, fig character with some mild prune juice, a kind of cola taste, faint dark bitter chocolate, light coffee flavors, with a mochaish, nutty chocolate praline, sort of "Ferrero Rocher", bran raisin muffin, chocolate oat granola bar backbone, with a soft molasses, chocolate, roated, biscuity, toasted, caramel cereal maltiness undertone, with a hint of anise spiciness, ans a silky brown sugar mochaish, subtle chocolate pie note, leading towards a warmth, yeasty, dried raisin, date, fig, prune fruitiness, chocolate wafer, cherry blossom chocolate candy, café mocha, fruitcake finish. Over those years the characteristic of Stone hoppiness has disappeared, leaving a nice sweet mellowness at the end.

Won this bottle on eBay and let it be noted the beer is now 5 years old. Any questions about this beer holding up to aging has been answered in my eyes. Very smooth, mellow and refined beer. Aroma was nice. Sweet deep chocolate and anise with slight notes of toffee. Pour was a deep dark brown with a slight splotchy tan film for a head. Taste was noticeably aged and mellowed. Heavy chocolate and anise combination in the front. Coffee, dark fruits and just a slight zing of Belgian yeast come in after the swallow. As it warms an emerging black licorice flavor starts coming out. Very nice complex beer but nothing great in my opinion.

Drank this for my 35th birthday. Beer is nearly opaque, very dark warm brown with an average-sized, beige, frothy, mostly diminishing head. First impression is that of balance and richness. The aroma is malty with moderate notes of roasted grain, chocolate; Yeasty with moderate notes of cellar; Moderate note of spicy alcohol, light notes of top soil and cola. The flavor is moderate-to-heavily sweet, lightly acidic with a long, warm, moderately bittersweet, lightly acidic finish. Alcohol is well hidden. The body is medium-to-full, the texture is velvety and the carbonation is soft.

Thanks to Schultsc for this bomber. Pours very dark brown/black with a few beige bubbles. Aromas of roasted dark malt and plum/raisin. Near full in body. The malt is sufficient to initially suggest cola. Then the fruit comes and goes, leaving a very roasty dark malt flavor. So it’s malt, fruit, spice, malt. Every time. It’s very smooth. There’s a bitterness off setting the malt sweetness, but it may be from the roast rather than hop. The alcohol is very subdued. Certainly suffered no harm from aging.

Gut! 10/11/12/12/11/12

22 oz. bottle shared by dbsdelight at The Royale- thanks again, Dan! Pours a cloudy brown color with copper highlights and a beige ring for a head. Aroma has a lot of dark fruits- raisins, dates, figs- along with brown sugar, caramel malts, and oak. Flavor of berries and the same dark fruits as the nose, earth, leaves, and toasted sweet malts. Light-medium bodied, with low carbonation and a juicy mouthfeel that seems just a wee bit watery, probably as a result of the age. Still a pretty cool beer that has held up fairly well over time.
