Commercial Description:
In this year's edition we took our inspiration from two Belgian styles: Saisons and Golden Triples. As such, the Stone 07.07.07 Vertical Epic has a deep, deep golden hue and the flavor is spicy, fruity, complex and refreshing. We used four different malts, and a subtle, yet distinct, blend of Glacier and Crystal hops to get just the right balance. Then, for the complexity, we added in some exotic spices --- including ginger, cardamom, grapefruit peel, lemon peel and orange peel (the latter three acknowledging our Southern California home) --- and a special Belgian yeast strain. All in all this is yet another case of us drawing from classic Belgian influences and cavalierly making it our own...San Diego style!

Thanks to Bartzilla! Copper colored with thin white film on top leaving some lacing. The aroma grows as the beer sits, abundant at first but more intense as it warms. I noticed this as I drank the entire bottle over ah hours period. Fresh flowers and peach and orange aromas. Slightly yeasty and sugary as well. Medium-light body, very crisp and sweet on the tongue. The alcohol melds well and it almost feels like it evaporates in the finish. Flavor is a blend of fruits, spices, malt and yeast. Sugary with light malt paired with some mild hops. Was there a hint of ginger, maybe. A yummy Belgian Strong Ale that would, if there were supple supplies, make well for daily drinking.

Smells like spiced moldy bread. Average golden appearance. Taste was surprisingly sweet with a bit of bitterness. The bitterness lasts way too long. The flavor coats the tongue and is not enjoyable for me.

Pours a translucent, hazy orange with no white head. Smells of wild yeast, vanilla and alcohol. Flavor is yeasty, with banana, peanuts, vanilla, hard candy and a touch of tangerine. Heavy alcohol contributes to a heavy mouthfeel. Might do well in the cellar for a year or two.

Clear straw-orange body, thin-medium off-white head. Aroma with (oh no!) strong spices, especially ginger, with clove, sugary, bready malt, and a touch of citrus. Rather dry, well-spiced body emphasizing ginger with some bubblegummy esters and modest bitter, citrusy hops in the finish. The residual sugars coat the palate after a few sips. This could be a re-release as far as I’m concerned, another Tripel/Saison hybrid that lacks the elegance of either. Not a bad beer, but a boring one, and aging it seems pointless.

This dark golden ale poured with a decent beige head and a floral hoppy boquet. The malt base is quite tasty and is enhanced with various fruits and spices and a subtle hop finish.

22oz bottle poured into a Trappist glass. Pours crystal clear amber with a large white frothy head. The head sticks around for along time but it leaves no lacing. The aroma is of corriander, by the aroma you would think it is a wit. Taking a drink the first taste i get is some corriander, followed by the belgian yeast. There is a little caramel malt in there. For the finish there is little to no bitterness from the hops. There is a slight finish of corriander. The body is medium to full with a creamy texture and soft carbonation. Overall I was actually not impressed with this. To me it seemed to much like a wit and I wonder how it will hold up for 5 years, I bought another bottle to try at 12-12-12

22oz. bottle. Oddly herbal, funky aroma, the citrus peel apparent along with a combination of lemon verbena, grass and straw, light spice, honeyish malt sweetness and faint alcohol, and estery, doughy, dusty yeast notes throughout. Clear light-medium golden amber color with rosy highlights, entirely lacking head or lace. Flavor shows a touch of sweetness to go along with the ever-present herbal, spicy, fruity tones, some tanginess, dried floral character and light breadiness towards the finish. Smooth and lightly effervescent palate, a bit on the thin side, body is medium. Possesses some Saison-like qualities, but not entirely impressive in its execution. The odds of this improving over a 5-year span also seem fairly slim.

22 oz. bomber. Pours a slightly hazy coppery gold with a massive yellow-white head that left partial lacing on the glass. Very bright aroma of citrus, sweet malt and spice. The flavor is sweet malt and citrus followed by the cardomom. The spice is very noticeable and reminds me a bit of Norweigan Christmas cookies. Fairly sweet with a moderately dry finish. A stronger alcohol burn than I would have expected at 8.4%. A few sharp edges, but otherwise a solid beer. I’d like to put one of these away for a year or two to see if it mellows a bit.
