In 2008, Stone Brewmasters Steve Wagner and Mitch Steele traveled to Belgium, where they enjoyed a number of hop-forward Belgian tripels, pale ales and IPAs—beers that had taken a cue from the U.S. craft brewing movement and inspired us in return. It’s a big reason 2008’s summer season came to be known at Stone as our “Summer of the Triple.” Upon their return, they crafted Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale, the seventh beer in the 11-beer Stone Vertical Epic Ale series. Packed with floral, spicy essence from Belgian yeast plus plenty of hoppy New World character, it’s our West Coast take on hop-driven Belgian beers.

(650ml Encore Series bottle from Systembolaget, shared) Pours clear dark gold with an average white head and lace. Nose is semi-sweet, floral, grapefruit peel, white pepper, orange flesh, biscuits, bready yeast. Flavour has semi-sweet orange, grapefruit, apricot, floral, phenolic, leafy, bready, white pepper. Semi dry finish with light bittering hops, herbs, grass, grapefruit peel. Medium-full bodied with fairly high carbonation and a little alcohol warmth. Hop fade definitely going on here, par for the course with Stone at SB. An ok tripel behind it, but nothing awesome. Maybe better fresh.

Big aroma with that Belgian character and some hop. Nice and clear in the glass, thick head that dies fast.. Taste is robust and balanced... A woody after taste, enjoyable

Bottle. Pours a clear golden body with a medium white top. Nice fruity aroma from the belgian yeasts, hints of citrus, candy and tropical fruits. Taste is very well balanced. Fruity, light sweet flavor with hints of honey and heather. Finishes on a slightly bitter note along with notes of pepper and a little bit of alcohol warmth as well. Fairly dry. Medium to full body with avg to high co2 levels. The belgians would approve I think :)

22 oz bottle from Whole Foods The ale poured a cloudy light amber with an off white head and lacing. Light aroma of hops and spices. The taste was more complex with spices, peaches and sweet malt. The ale has a medium body and soft carbonation. The finish was sweet with apricots and peaches. There is a warming feeling also from the high ABV.

Lots of yeastiness, fruity esthery, floral, citric and grapefruity hoppy goodiness, ABV evident, lightly grassy finish. Golden colour, medium white head, lacing. Noticably sweet, medium bite aromatic, grapefruity bite, good marriage between Belgium and the United states. Fullbodied, average carbonation, complex floral and fruity bitter finish. Solid!
