COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 2008, Stone Brewmasters Steve Wagner and Mitch Steele traveled to Belgium, where they enjoyed a number of hop-forward Belgian tripels, pale ales and IPAs—beers that had taken a cue from the U.S. craft brewing movement and inspired us in return. It’s a big reason 2008’s summer season came to be known at Stone as our “Summer of the Triple.” Upon their return, they crafted Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale, the seventh beer in the 11-beer Stone Vertical Epic Ale series. Packed with floral, spicy essence from Belgian yeast plus plenty of hoppy New World character, it’s our West Coast take on hop-driven Belgian beers.

From the bottle to pour is clear with a high carbonation and a medium to thick white head, the color is orange and blonde, the aroma is yeast notes of bread and lemon, the taste is immediately bitter with sweetness following the bitterness there’s a strong presence of citrus the very nice light hop backing comics the mouth feel is medium. My overall impression is this is a very solid ale I get the notes of the Belgian ale and the idea of a Belgian Strong Ale but it doesn’t seem to have as much aged flavorings or carmel notes a typical Belgian type of beer would have. But for an ale this is a great showing.

Bomber. Spicy Belgian yeast aroma with light clove notes as well as citrus hops and some banana also. Pours clear golden colored with a thin white head with good retention and lacing. Starts with spicy Belgian yeast and a bit of clove. Finishes dry with citrus hop flavors unfortunately though the banana is hidden by the bitterness of the hops. Very nice, but miss the banana of most tripels.

Bottle from beerhive. Pale gold, small white head. Yeasty hoppy Belgian spritz. Medium body, light fizz. Sticky. Sweet bready front. Citrus and bitter hops. Dry. Hefty.

A hoppy tripel. Not a style that I'm a huge fan of. I generally tend to think that the hops overpower the best things about the Belgian styles, rather than accentuating the good flavours like they do in a black ipa. This is a good example of hoppy tripel done right. Great blend of tripel sweetness and ipa hoppyness. However, you lose those beautiful banana and clove characteristics that tripels are known for in a barrel of hops. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bigger beer. Sweetness reminiscent of apple juice. Pleasant crystal clear gold. Lots of pepper and clove. It’s alright, but I’d like more attenuation and depth. Maybe this would have been better fresh with more hops? Bottled 9/15, reviewing in late 2/16.

Pretty good, but the bitterness got to be overpowering by the end. There are a lot of Belgian aromas and flavors as soon as you open the bottle, but the amount of bittering hops completely overpowers everything, turning what was already a behemoth of a beer into a bit of a bitter beast.

Bottle thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - golden with a decent head. Nose - light banana and orange. Taste - some gnarly malt and bananas again. Dried orange too. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy yet tangy texture and a long dry tangy finish. Overall - yep good. A milder more sessionable version of the style.
