COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale is a Strong Golden Belgian style ale highly hopped with American hops (Ahtanum, Amarillo and Simcoe). The beer pours pale golden with a thick and creamy white head of foam. The aroma is full of depth: nuances of pepper, clove, and banana from the Belgian yeast strain, and the resiny citrus notes from the American hops blend together nicely to provide a complex aromatic character. The taste is spicy, hoppy and fruity, with a very dry and a pleasant bitter end. The bitterness lingers nicely, and provides a refreshing finish that leads you to want to drink more and more of this beer!

On tap; pour is clear dark golden with a frothy, fine bubbled white head that retains well in this glass. The nose is very fruity, slightly vinous, yeasty, and spicy peppery. This brew is spicy out of the gate, pepper, light fruits, peaches, caramel, with a nice mellow hop profile, at least at this juncture. Very nice brew.

On tap at Tribes Alehouse. Pour is hazy golden with no head. Aroma is caramel malts, light fruit, and pale malts. Flavor brings out more of the belgian qualities - yeast, banana, cloves, cane sugar, and grapefruit.

I get the hops here on the front side, and thatís impressive on account of the age of this bottle. Thereís some pepper there, too. Golden, nice Belgian senses though not the best that Stone brews. Bottle.

Nice beer, just opened. Taste a touch on the watery side but overall superior. Pours hazy dark amber with great head and lacing. Smells of tangerine and some hay-like musk. Taste slightly bitter and sour. Some peel like astringency. Bottle thanks to Boutip.

Reviewed 12.12.12 Celebrating the Vertical Epic Series P: Clear pale golden body with a thin layer of white head that leaves delicate lacing. S: Citrus hops, honeydew, ginger, light banana phenols, spices, pippali pepper sprinkled on honey, and lemon zest. T/M: Dirty earthy taste. White grapes, bitter apple peels, pippali pepper, pears, powdery yeast and a more vibrant flavor than the others in the series. The fresh ness really shines. Dry crisp full body with good carbonation and a clean finish of fruit rind bitterness. O: The amarilo hop character was surprisingly vibrant and brilliantly aged. The intense flavors offered a nicely developed golden ale. Very nice and great drinkability. Serving type: bottle

Hazy golden pour with a small white head. Doughy yeast aromas. Sweet malty flavor with some subtle spice character on the palate. Notes of clove and banana add a nice complexity to this one. Very drinkable. Props to StFun and Sloth for this one!

Bottle, 22oz, from trade with Papsoe. Itís a lightly unclear golden colored beer topped by a small, off-white head. Thereís still a lovely hoppyness in the aroma, even though itís close to five years old. Citrus peel, pine cones, alcohol and a nice maltyness too. The flavor has a nice bitterness, itís slightly sweetish, with pine cones and citrus peel. Some alcohol and a malty backdrop. Full body, a tad too much carbonation. Bitter and fruity finish. A pretty pleasant and moreish one. Perhaps a bit unbalanced, but I like it anyway. 130607

Poured to NB globe during an 06-10 VE tasting. A: Golden, hazy with single finger fine white foam which sticks around. Decent spider lacing. Golden butterscotch look. S: Peppercorns, green apples, belgian yeast. Floral qualities, jasmine. Decent, but not great. T: Cloves, apples, bananas over a slightly sour amberesque ale. The beer also evolves to reveal a slight alcohol flavor. Not really a taste I would anticipate from an IPA (even belgian). M: medium body with fine, assertive carbonation. Leaves the palate dry. D: This is a decent beer, but not nearly as good as some of the other offerings from the series I sampled. Serving type: bottle 02-22-2011

This bomber from Sahara Mart back in the day, for $7.99. Nose is sweet, predominately Belgian yeast with lemon and golden malt, some vanilla/meringue. Poured a hazy orange edging golden, with a short bright white head. Spicy taste, faintly tangy with light bitterness, moderately dry, lots of golden malt with earthy, spicy gentle hops swirling around, a very full body with medium carbonation and plenty of nice oily, resinous, citrus-heavy hop elements. Strongly phenolic (clove most of all) with some faint pepper and medium-strong orange peel. Very lightly woody. The yeast is nice but not particularly showy; at this point, you could have poured this from a blank bottle and told me it was a standard Tripel, and I would have absolutely believed you -- have to imagine the fresher hops would have imparted a very different character instead of lurking in the bg, though they do still provide some chewy resin. Alcohol is very well-integrated, an impressively uniform achievement across this series.
