The Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale is a Strong Golden Belgian style ale highly hopped with American hops (Ahtanum, Amarillo and Simcoe). The beer pours pale golden with a thick and creamy white head of foam. The aroma is full of depth: nuances of pepper, clove, and banana from the Belgian yeast strain, and the resiny citrus notes from the American hops blend together nicely to provide a complex aromatic character. The taste is spicy, hoppy and fruity, with a very dry and a pleasant bitter end. The bitterness lingers nicely, and provides a refreshing finish that leads you to want to drink more and more of this beer!

I was shocked to see this still for sale. a four year old beer! Funny to think that if one were to go into a grocery store and ask for four year old this or that the workersíd give funny looks (same goes for the concept of older wine). Anyways, this is pretty good, but not my favorite. Stone has much better beers. This is very good for itís style (I suppose), but just isnít what I expected based on the description. Not nearly as hoppy as the description seemed to suggest. Good beer, but would I spend another 16.99 to acquire this? No, plain and simple.

Aroma: Dry orange, mineral, yeast, touch of coriander and dry orange "syrup." Palate: Full-body Flavor: Moderately concentrated orange, mineral, yeast, followed by a bitter hop and orange peel bite on the mid-palate and yeasty finish. Comment: Well-integrated. This is a bit reminiscent of a S. French Viognier-like aroma and flavor and viscosity.

August 7, 2015 - bottle via trade. Cloudy darkish orange pour with nice amount of head that lasted for a bit. Aroma was strong citrus/orange, spice and yeast. Taste was more like a fruited saison than a hopped up belgian, which was a good thing for me and most likely a result of this being 7 years old almost to the day. Strong citrus in the flavor with spice and a faint bitterness and alcohol in the finish.

Bomber to snifter (shared with the Mrs; thanks adnielsen). Looks good; a very hazy apricot with white head that slowly but steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells solid; semi-sweet and hoppy with notes citrus zest and Belgian yeast. The yeast doesnít dominate though, which is nice. Some caramel too. Tastes like it smells with a pleasant medium full-bodied mouthfeel. Enjoyable, and has withstood the test of time nicely.

bomber - no idea from who or when or how old? not sure this is a Belgian either - aroma was beer - malty sweetness. orange hued pour. taste - meh; kinda a sugary yeasty slight hop mess. some redeeming qualities but not good together.

Bottle at home, big thanks to Fin for swapping this one with me, 18/01/15. Hazed orange amber with a decent off white covering that dissipates a little then retains. Nose is candied fruit peel, pepper, spice, clove, sugar, light caramel, bitter orange. Taste comprises light must, yeast esters, spice, clove, white pepper, grassy, bitter citric notes. Medium + body, fine carbonation, yeast esters and bitter fruit licks in the close. Decent Belgian strong, good balance, not too sweet, has aged well.

From notes. Tasted on 12/12/12 from a capped 22oz bottle with Curtis, and the Nashville crew. Pours hazy light orange with a thick white head that slowly recedes to a thin layer of even lace. The nose is lightly sweet caramel with some aged hops, spicy and estery yeast and a light vegetal note. The flavor is candi sugar and caramel malt, spicy yeast, and some aged hops, tastes just like a hoppy, aged tripel. The body is medium with lively carbonation and a long spicy caramel with a touch of heat finish.

Sampled around a StlBrews table, thanks for sharing! It poured a hazy golden colour with deep white foam, long-lasting with lots of fine Belgian lace. Grainy, caramelly sweet, surprising amount of citrusy hop bitterness and flavour still intact. Tangy fruit flavours, subtle peppery yeast spice. At 6+ years old, it was definitely oxidized. A hint of soy sauce, but not bad, not as mushy and cardboardy as typical with beers this old. Still tasty and complex. Boozy, warming, but not harsh. Light-medium body, strong carbonation, well-balanced bittersweet aftertaste.

Bottle @ RG 21. Light amber. I get a lot of honey in the nose and booziness. Flavor is weaker with some graininess.

Bottle pour @ the 21st Richmond Gathering. Deep gold with a small head. Nose is golden apples and banana. Some clove. General spice rack. Paper. Cereal. Taste is pretty oxidized. Peppery, loads of paper. So tied. Medium body, soft carb. Not good.

"a dark, dry hopped beer...yummy. fairly unique brew, and even though dry hopped, not overly hopped, especially by Stoneís standards, as another rater noted. frsh re-releases after the 11th anniversary have gotten even better. the last two times i had this nice freshly hoppy dark brew, itís been awesome
