3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
22 oz. bottle served in shaker- poured a non transparent when held to a light source solid black color, light medium carbonation, just a few whisps upon the liquid surface for a head. Aroma of cheap booze, acetone, clove, and faint notes of dark chocolate. Hits the mouth with a medium body, malt is very solid, dark fruit and what appears to be hops in the middle, finish has some faded vanilla. Dark chocolate was everywhere, and I should note that there is just an ever so slight amount of oil upon the liquid surface after tasting. Odd brew- looks and smells like an impy stout, but itís not.

4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma of chocolate, Belgian yeast, and vanilla with a hint of fruit. Pours a beautiful, unexpected, black-brown with a khaki ring and no lacing. The taste is amazing! Chocolate, vanilla, wood, toasty malts, with notes of citrus. Full body with soft carbonation. Velvety mouthfeel. Slight tongue tingle after the swallow. Overall, this is an excellant beer! Seems like it ought to be a stout, but who cares this one is a winner!

Tap. Near black with small head. Chocolate and cardboard. Wish I hadnít read a previous review, or I probably wouldnít taste the cardboard, but now I canít get past it. My least favorite of the Epics Iíve had.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Oh wow, What a great complex beer! Chocolate and spice dominated the aroma. The beer poured a thick creamy black. The taste was very chocolatey and fruity but that gave way to the strong wood character and vanilla finish. A very satisfying beer.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
On draught at Brews Cafe. Pours motor oil black with a medium tan head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of earthy malt, chocolate and dark fruit. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, dark chocolate, slightly sour fruit and oak. The finish is oaky with a tart fruit aftertaste. Did not have this one when it came out, but still pretty enjoyable.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark brown. Chocolate nose with some baking spices. Foamy almost nitro looking cascading carbonation. Rich dark roast and sweet malt flavors with chocolate. Vanilla and citrus are very subtle. More complex than the wine barrel version that I had. Probably my favorite of the vertical.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Healthy tulip pour of deep dark with finger and a half khaki head. Nose is sweet and malty, noticeable chocolate and mild spice. Thank god for mild spice. Flavor is rich and smooth, somewhat velvety, plenty of chocolate and sweetness, mild spice, which is really pleasant. Iím really surprised by this one. I didnít think Iíd dig it, not being a fan of Belgian yeast, but the spice wasnít overbearing and really enjoyable. I guess a couple years on this one was the right call.
