COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This ninth edition of our Stone Vertical Epic Ale series takes two interesting left turns. A Belgian-style golden triple is the starting point of this beer, but the first left turn is nearly immediate with the addition of dried chamomile flowers, triticale, and Belgian amber candi sugar. The second, and rather unusual left turn takes us half an hour up the road from Stone to Temecula courtesy of the addition of just-pressed Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from our friends at South Coast Winery. As the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series has moved through the calendar, we found that the brewing schedule for a 10.10.10 release coincided nicely with the grape harvest, neatly providing an interesting twist in this epic ale.

Bottle from Russell’s Liquors. Pours blood orange without a ton of carbonation and a thin head. Lots of grape and sugar on the tongue. Hides its alcohol well. Solid but I was hoping it was more spectacular.

FROM NOTES: July 3, ’12 Poured from a 22 ounce bomber into a couple of Stone pint glasses. Shared with Phillip on a July night in ’12 because we are impatient bastards. A: Lots of lemon zest, a moderate amount of banana, and hint of clove. Yeastiness shines through from the background. A: Slightly cloudy tangerine in color. A big pour yields a half-finger head that fades fast, leaving a minor white collar and no lacing. T: Lots of wine flavor from the grapes with a pleasant bitterness and a nice twist from the Belgian yeast. Citrusy hops hit strong on the finish. P: Medium to full bodied with low carbonation. Strong sticky lemon flavors on the back end, and a good dry finish. O: The lack of balance with this beer made it somewhat undrinkable. I look forward to trying this again as part of the "big flight" when the epic series concludes, but I don’t feel much desire to have another one today. We should have waited.

Dark and foreboding with a thin head. Dark brown sugar and candy aromas. High alcohol and more candies sugars dominate the finish. Hot and sweet finish.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber with a small-medium white head. Aroma is white wine, grapes, spicy Belgian yeast. Taste is very sweet, more white wine and spice from the yeast. Finish is dry, slightly tart. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Not bad, interesting.

natejgood (397) - Bozeman, Montana, USA - SEP 21, 2013
Pours a hazy orange. There isn’t much in the way of carbonation or head, but that could be because the beer is three years old at this point. Aroma of dark fruits, dates and honey. It smells very sweet. The grape flavor comes through nicely in this beer but isn’t overpowering. The beer has a slight sowerness to it that helps cut the fairly sweet aroma. Flavor seems a bit muddled though, as there is also a bit of malt mixed with the sour grape flavor. Feels fairly flat in the mouth, but not in a bad way. Interesting beer, but not one of my favorites from Stone.

DocJitsu (1049) - Florida, USA - SEP 14, 2013
Pours a slightly cloudy golden color with a short-lived off-white head. Some cider and Belgian spice on the nose. Wet, somewhat sticky mouthfeel. A bit warm. Well-blended sweet, lightly sour, and Sprite flavors.

   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 3/5   TASTE 6/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 15/20
Westmeister (1839) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - SEP 3, 2013
Bottle. I had the 09 to 12, but been drinking one by one. Smell is sweet and musty white grapes, light spice, quite floral, caramel, fruity yeast. Taste is big fruity yeast, week old white wine, lots of white grape skins, spice, flowers and booze as it warms. Interesting and no signs of oxidation. Slight sour tinge, moderate to heavy sweet, lightly carbonated, lingering sweet/grape musty. Decent.
