This ninth edition of our Stone Vertical Epic Ale series takes two interesting left turns. A Belgian-style golden triple is the starting point of this beer, but the first left turn is nearly immediate with the addition of dried chamomile flowers, triticale, and Belgian amber candi sugar. The second, and rather unusual left turn takes us half an hour up the road from Stone to Temecula courtesy of the addition of just-pressed Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from our friends at South Coast Winery. As the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series has moved through the calendar, we found that the brewing schedule for a 10.10.10 release coincided nicely with the grape harvest, neatly providing an interesting twist in this epic ale.

Poured a very hazy orange with very light head which dissipates fairly quickly. Aroma is definitely heavy on the grapes and a bit of sweet candi sugar. Taste up front has the belgian yeast and the fruity taste of grape dominating, with the balance being created by the belgian sugars. The drier white grapes certainly create a nice fruity aftertaste, with the sauvignon blanc coming through more than anything else. All in all, a great experiment that should be reproduced in the future.

Pours clear orange. Smells like white wine ah jeez! A bit funky. Taste is refreshingly juicy, with a grape flavor I find quite good. Finish is dry, like eating green grapes. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(22 ounce bomber - shaker glass) Aroma is of white wine. Pours a yellow translucent color. Taste is acidic, light sweetness, and light bitterness. Dry finish, average to lively carbonation and medium body. I found this beer challenging and it reminded me of white wine, overall a good experience.

Notes from 2011 -- From the bottle it pours a transluscent golden yellow w/ white head. Smells slightly carmelly white a little grape on the nose. Crisp flavor of carmel, grapes, slight alcohol bite with citrus on the tongue. Very nice, would love to drink multiples.

Opened 12.31.12, what a wonderful funky aroma! Reminds me almost of the smell of Orval, very strong aroma. Extremely smooth and sparkling palate, long lasting aftertaste with an explosion of yeasty and spicy flavours. Wonderful beer! Sad I probably won’t see another :P

Golden pour with a white head. Aroma of sourdough bread, sweet fruit, and lemon peel. The palate may be the best part of this beer - the grapes hit the sides of the tongue with their sweetness and then a long sour linger. The taste is not exceptional, any subtlety overpowered by yeast. The chamomile is noticeable in the back of the mouth. As for the triticale, isn’t that for tribbles?

Tap at Brouwers. Pours golden yellow with slight white bubbly head. Nose is floral, sliht hops, Belgian yeast, Belgian candy sugar, white grapes, funky lemon zest, slight peppery spice, chocolate, and the chamomile is strangely evident. Belgian yeast, spicy pepper, lemon zest, chocolate, candy sugar, white grapes, and slight hops. Mouthfeel is between watery and slightly oily. Decent beer...08 and 09 were better.

Smells like dish water. Starts light and moves into a smooth amber finishing with faint grapes and banana esters. Solid but could be more momentous

Sadly, my bottle saved for two years was lacking a bit in the carbonation department. Nice grapey windy aroma, but Belgian yeast is there too. Very unique flavor with the wine/beer blend. I really like this one and wish it had more bubbles.

Poured from the bottle, the beer has a great medium-golden, apple-juice-like color, but there is only a quickly-receding, cream-colored foam that settles into a meager ring. The aroma is a bit interesting yet forgettable at the same time, with notes of tart apples, white wine, and a musty herbal character (hops and chamomile?). The flavor is very vinous, with the various grape varietals largely overpowering the triple base (although those flavors are certainly still present). The fine yet noticeable carbonation doesn’t smooth out the flavors like I would want it to.
