TChrome (1296), Bedford, Texas, USA Dec 28, 2006 Beer pours apricot color with a modestely retained off white head. Aroma is nicely hoppy with a good bit of grapefruit, but there is also an overwhelming burnt sugar note that distracts from the hops. Initial flavor is not too bad, intitial hoppy grapefruit note, but this is soon pummeled into submission by a massive onslaught of cane sugar, molassess, and brown sugar. For me this is a sugar overdose. This is my fifth bottle, and I should have stopped at one. Stone Brewing was once my favorite brewery, but I can’t help but think that they are slipping having let this train wreck out of their doors. barbiedoll0808 (11), New York, USA Dec 28, 2006 Very nice beer with a wonderful hop aroma. Yeast and alcohol aroma are also present and add nice balance and character. There is a slight malt finish in the back, but for a 10% beer it is actually surprisingly dry - which is just right for this big of a double IPA. The bitterness is robust early, but then subsides quickly and lacks a lot of back of the mouth bitterness. The flavor is a bit hot - perhaps a hot ferment. I also get a slight medicinal flavor to it. Overall a very good beer, though the hot flavor in the after taste is a little overpowering. May need some time to age and mellow. ogglethorp (882), Ohio, USA Dec 27, 2006 Gigungis 3L bottle. Pours a orange-amber color, slightly hazy, large off white thick head. Aroma is huge floral, grapefruit, piney, orange. Flavor is hops, fruit, peach, mango, pine. Palate is medium, some alcohol warmth, medium carbonation, bitter finish. Awesome stuff. VTHopHead (895), Barre, Vermont, USA Dec 25, 2006 Bomber - Poured a amber/orange/red in color with a small white head. Aroma is strong of citrus and pine hops. Flavor is perhaps the strongest citrus/grapefruit hops that I have ever encountered in an IPA. Almost like it was mixed with grapefruit juice... awesome! Has enough malt present to call it somewhat balanced, but the hops are the dominant flavor and character (for me, that is a good thing). I *really* like this beer!! jayme9874 (756), Hamburg, New York, USA Dec 23, 2006 Deep amber/copper. Dimishing head, stays wispy with nice lacing. Nose of caramel, resin, pineapple, bit of alcohol. Medium-full bodied, lots of tropical esters, damn rich and creamy for an IPA, sweet malts, lots of hop flavor, something cedar like is sticking with me in the finish at the back of throat, weird hop?. Alcohol lights you up, lots of hop burps. Fun beer. Storm (2685), Amager, Denmark Dec 22, 2006 65 cl bottle. Clear amber colour with a creamy white head. Great aroma of heavy burned caramel with notes of fat hops. Flavour starts with a massive hoppieness and ends with notes of carmel and with a noteable of alcohol, very nice endeed. rudolf (1734), Buffalo, New York, USA Dec 21, 2006 Bottle at Cole’s. Rich copper, thin white head. Nose isn’t really jumping out at me but I’m getting caramel, malt, piney resin hops, cotton candy, slight alcohol burn. Flavor is caramel up front, breaking into sweet orange and then a glorious malt & caramel bomb with plenty of piney hops, and cotton candy. Finish is strongly bitter but with more of that cotton candy (what the heck is that? There is plenty of it in Old Numbskull as well) A stunning beer. One that reassures my faith it what used to be my favorite style. Schultsc (478), Henderson, Nevada, USA Dec 21, 2006 Updated: Jan 9, 2007This is one of the best limited releases yet from stone. Pours a bright orange with a medium fine white head. The 10% alcohol takes center stage here and is quite prominient in both the aroma and the flavor. But it is not out of balance. Huge hop aroma abounds with lots of dark citrus and woodsy resin characteristics--high bitterness as well. The body is thick and a little syrupy with lots of malt sweetness. This reigns in the alcohol reasonably well. Overall, this beer is an experience to behold--and should last for some time in the cellar. Seek it out. It’s something special.
