Veeve (312), Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA Oct 22, 2006 served at NYC Brewtopiafest. a hazy amber-brown body with a good sized off-white head. aroma is fresh, of pine, grass, citrus and honey. tastes of an explosion of strong flavors. tangerine, pineapple, orage, hops, honey, pine, mint and a drop of alcohol. completely unexpected. OldGrowth (1407), North Carolina, USA Oct 22, 2006 Bottle, from trade with jimbowood. Good nose, sweet & sour. Grainy, woody, citrus, honey, cobweb mustiness. Hazed brownish orange color, small head (though I poured slowly as it looked like it might go big if I wasn’t careful) good lace. Bitter flavor, like aroma, with the grapefruit & mustiness ruling. Little whisky buttery thing too. Medium body, Smooth oily creamy mouthfeel, bitter finish. It’s good, but I don’t like that musty/cobweb thing so it knocks down the overall score for me. nijuro (63), USA Oct 22, 2006 one of the hoppiest IPAs I’ve tasted. Tons of grapefruit on the palate with a touch of honey and a lingering sweetness through a very hoppy, bitter finish. Outstanding ale. 0o9i (326), Reno, Nevada, USA Oct 21, 2006 Updated: Oct 22, 2006Bottled. Clear, honey colored body w/big off-white head, giant in size, sticky lace. Aroma is rich and malty, yeasty and hoppy. Smells sweet and wonderful like Yulesmith. Touch of alcohol in aroma. Body is fullish with light carb and a nicely dry finish. Flavor is rich: sweet caramel and honey with noticeable hops in a floral presence, leaving behind a pollenated and lovely finish. Delicious. Coylingly sweet. Man it’s good tho. In spite of ABV, it’s sessionable--it’s that tasty. Reminds me SO much of Yulesmith, but missing a few key components (orange and all that yeastiness!) and with more alcohol. The alcohol is invisible. Mmmm...good. bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Oct 20, 2006 Poured a dark amber color. Aroma was wow grapefruit big time and some pine hops. Flavor was much the same with fruits and caramel in there to balance it out. Alcohol was very hot. Solid beer not my fav DIPA. ChazMania (408), Pasadena, California, USA Oct 19, 2006 I have had a few bottles of this, plus had it on tap. This is simply a fantastic double IPA! Count me in on wanting them to make this a regular release. Full hop aroma and flavor dance on my taste buds. It has all the great character of the best DIPA’s. They describe it as colossal and i agree. I’m glad I bought a case when it was released so I can periodically enjoy this masterful piece of work. Reid (1085), Salem, Oregon, USA Oct 19, 2006 Nice looking brew, dark/burnt orange , slightly hazy with a lovelly thicj creamy off white head ( eggshell).
Nice bitter hoppy, citric aroma, still quite fresh, so good so far.
But the taste, I will have to go against the grain, its way too sweet. Yes there is a great amount of hoppiness swirling about the mouth but underlying sweetness sort of messes this up for me, it sticks to my tongue and becomes cloying, putting me off the great hopping.
To cloying on the palte, too sweet.
Man i really feel bad about going against the grain on this..i love most everything Stone does, but even for a Scot who likes sweet beer this was too much.
Thanks for the beer "kenb"!! Wicked6 (1), Rio Rancho, New Mexico, USA does not count Oct 18, 2006 Insane. This beer starts off with a sucker punch to the tongue - much like Ruination does.. Definitely more hop presence, splits the difference between a DIPA and a barleywine.. For whatever reason, I enjoyed the last half of the bottle more than the first - more of the flavor and complexity comes out as it warms a bit. I nursed this one intentionally, as it got better and better.. In the last 3 draws, I held it "on palate" & swirled it a bit before swallowing. VERY good. Can’t wait for another.
