phiconners (122), Massachusetts, USA Oct 6, 2006 Nice pour with moderate head. Aroma is fantastic for an IPA, lots of hops coming through. Flavor is very interesting - more malt coming through than I expected, but a ton of hops as well. Alcohol comes through just a bit. A fantastic beer. dabinduppes (1), Anaheim, California, USA does not count Oct 6, 2006 Im not a big fan of Stone’s brew. I love IPA, I love hops...but most of the brews Ive tried were too overboard. This beer is the exception. It made me reconsider Stone and go and start drinking my way thru the catalogue.
Everytime I pour a glass of this, I cant help but to gush...its an incredible taste, perfect balance ! duffman462 (160), Gainesville, Florida, USA Oct 6, 2006 Pours a beautiful color, very dark copper. Tried serving it with some steak...I ended up drinking the whole thing before I touched my steak. A really fantastic beer....very hoppy, but with enough malt to balance it out. Some citrus, and some alcohol too (after finishing it, I must say that the alcohol was well masked...a stong brew!!) Long aftertaste...very piney and complex. A superb IPA. I’ve probably had one that was this good before, but not within memory. If I could get this on tap at the bar across the street, I’d never see the light of day again. Hazy burnt orange with a thick orange cream head. Head diminishes at a medium pace and settles to a half inch cap. Rings of sticky lace coat the glass.
Aroma is fruity, piney, woody, and alcohol.
Flavor is caramel over grapefruit. A little sweet at first, then the hops kick in. Piney, grapefruity, resiny.
Still, enough maltiness to keep it from getting out of control. A touch of alcohol burn on the way down.
Finish starts out a little sticky sweet, but ends up lip tingling bitter.
One for the celllar for sure.
sheatripper (863), Brooklyn, New York, USA Oct 5, 2006 Bomber. Poured slightly hazy orange, with an off-white head which diminished quickly but left striped lacing when the glass was tipped. Tantalizing initial aroma of tropical fruit (pineapple, passion, etc.) with grapefruit and apricot as well. First sip was a sharp hop bomb, very biting and very resiny, with grapefruit rind, pith even, and pine needles, leaving an itintial bitter and astringent finish with a teeth-clinging bitter pine/balsam oil aftertaste which, along with the alcohol, created a medicinal feel, almost...if I dare say... like Buckley’s (!) However, after some time, the beer seemed to mellow out, and the flavor and palate captured more of the quality hopiness and its attendant grapefruit/gum qualities. Overall, while I absolutely love hops (I’m lighting a candle for those destroyed in the Yakima warehouse) and consider Stone one of the masters of the hop, I didn’t feel that the tremendous hop profile here melded well with the overall product the whole way through. harmfuldrunk (288), New Jersey, USA Oct 3, 2006 a delicious grapefruit aroma and taste on this stone brew, very delicate clean crisp and sexy. I shall drink more. jimcook (14), Cathedral City, California, USA Oct 3, 2006 Beautiful dark copper color, light carbonation. Initial taste is akin to chewing on hops. This flavor gives way a bit to the malt and alcohol, but then takes over again on the finish. A must for the IPA fan. chilehead (186), Laguna Niguel, California, USA Oct 3, 2006 Awesome IPA, pours copper with a full head. Nose is of floral hops, and the mouth delivers with a full hop profile. Also had at GABF and it was a favorite of many that I talked to.
