pinkzambia (986), Boise, Idaho, USA Oct 2, 2006 Bottle:Clear copper color with a nice white head and sticky lacing. This brew showcases a powerful hop aroma along with citrus resin and some sweet spices. It has an initial sweet flavor but is followed by a growing bitter sensation across the tongue. The aftertaste is sweet and you can feel a slight alcohol burn on the back of your throat. But for the most part, it hides the alcohol well. Another astonishing brew from Stone. Thanks Indiana Red! BuckeyeBoy (1645), Boise, Idaho, USA Oct 2, 2006 22oz Bottle Pours out Great Copper topped with off white head. A very nice arom off Great Hops. Has a great tast. thanks Indiana Red for this gem. csbosox (1076), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Oct 2, 2006 22oz bottle from KenB. I am down to the last 3-4oz. Bottle has been open for a good hour and a half and it was great with cold pizza. Color is orange/coppered color with foam dots and lacing behind. Aroma is pineywith some orange, brown sugar, and floral aspects. The intial taste is brown sugar & dark caramel, with pine and citrus hints, followed by a much appreciated rough chinook hops rush, more caramel, and a bitter piney finish. The malt backing is appreciated and the hops are certainly no fly on the wall. Thick, full bodied mouthfeel. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA Oct 2, 2006 Bottle courtesy of the rater formerly known as wohlfs. Deep orange/copper in color, average off white head, oily lacing covering an entire Duvel glass. Aroma is very sticky resins. Lots of pine, tons of mango, and various carribean fruity character. If that is a simcoe trait, this is fast becoming my favorite hop. Huge malty background. Caramel, toffee, mollasses. Flavor again big and bold. Huge chewy malt sweetness up front, fades into sticky hop resin through the middle. Never finishes, leaves a big sticky/syruppy aftertaste. Great thick, full, chewy mouthfeel. Don’t really get any warming alcohol, but I am getting a nice little buzz after 3/4 of the bottle so far. Could be a tad hoppier, still very nice nonetheless. Surprised at the overall, especially in the "big and bold, is better", climate of ratebeer. alexanderj (2213), Chino Hills, California, USA Oct 2, 2006 Updated: Jan 19, 2007Poured a very clear, reddish-copper. Very nice color. Small, quickly vanishing, white head. Nose was great. Can really smell pine reson. Also notes of citrus, a sweet malt, and hops. Alcohol also present. Liked it alot. Initial reaction was wow; alot of hops but alot of complexity. Hard to explain the taste, alot going on. I’m going to pick up a few and let them age. Highly recommended. adsynth (2), Scottsdale, Arizona, USA does not count Oct 2, 2006 High gravity with 10% ABV, the balance is right on (akin to Stone’s Double Bastard).
The nose carries pine resins with more fruit than flower notes.
The color is darker than average IPA due to the toasted/roasted malts. Rusty amber.
The carbonation is lighter due to high ABV. (my type of low "carb" beer)
The taste is malt rich sherpa carrying a load of complex hops to the summit of your palate.
I can’t wait to cellar a few of these. MIBRomeo (1962), Wisconsin, USA Oct 2, 2006 copper color full foamy off white head w/ nice lacing. Well hopped aroma some lemon zest and piney resins along w/ a sweet malt. Palate is lightly oily well coated and a light creaminess. Flavor is a sweet IPA lots of carmels and a very fruity citrussy strawberry hinted hop finishes light. Very good stuff.. much better than the regular IPA. fbennett (293), Lowell, Massachusetts, USA Oct 2, 2006 This offering from Stone pours a deep orange maybe some hint of maroon very nice shading. It left a thin tan head that disappeared quickly but was remedied by a couple swirls in my Rapscallion snifter. The aroma is fantastic, pineapple, passion fruit, honey, hoppy citrus notes, slight alcohal presence, this is a very complex nose so much going on I don’t think I can describe everything.
As I took the first sip there is a sweetness upfront of caramel and fruit, the hops in this brew actually don’t dominate as much as I expected in a IIPA but don’t get me wrong they are very much present. The alcohal in this brew is very suttle and by the end of this 22oz bottle I began to feel its presence. The finish is smooth a small grapefruit bitterness but because of that dominate malt presence not very stong. Overall this is a fantastic brew the aroma is phenomenal and well worth the price at $5.95/22oz bottle.
