Our Stone 11.11.11 Vertical Epic Ale proved to be an eccentric diversion from our previous lineup of innovative Belgian-inspired brews. And considering we’re Stone, that’s really saying something. This unprecedented beer was brewed with cinnamon sticks and Anaheim green chilies, giving it an amazing flavor profile unlike anything that came before it. It certainly didn’t need any enhancement, but we just don’t know when to leave well enough alone (and we’ve demonstrated before that you can, indeed, improve upon perfection). So we decided to tinker with it a bit and laid a small portion to rest in wine barrels. Not wanting to limit our experiment to only red or white wine barrels, we choose both. Treat yourself to a bottle of each and compare. All in the name of science, of course...

oooh! Much better than the normal version. The aroma is like a spicy wine. it looks a reddish mud with some small white head. The taste is slightly sweet throughout, a little tart and has some some very light spice. Cinnamon, jalapenos, minty herbs and wine round out the flavor. The tannic finish on this beer is amazing and totally makes the beer. It’s medium bodied and has a soft mouth feel. Overall quite good and a huge improvement from the astringent normal version.

500ml bottle pours a hazy amber with an off white head. Chili and cinnamon aroma. Taste is the same with an oak wine finish.

This beer aged very well. It also had a great aroma and flavor profile. Cinnamon, chiles and the red wine barrels combine for a tremendous taste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured an amber red color with aromas of grain, spice, some light fruit, wine and some oak. Flat or are the same but dominated by the red wine flavors decent beer but won’t need to have again.

Murky amber brown color, moderate head, good lacing and retention. Aroma is barrel dominated with notes of caramel, cookie, spice, cinnamon. Medium bodied, alcohol hidden well. Barrel flavor dominates and comes close to overpowering the rest but doesn’t completely override what else is here. Pretty decent but at $40/bottle????????

500ml bottle, thanks to DanielCoor for sharing. Hazy amber-red color. Thin khaki head, with good retention. Dots of lace. Vinous, tannic, sort of tart nose, some dark fruit. Tart, kind of spicy aroma. Some herbal, indian-style spices. Very interesting, potent aroma. Bigger body. Smooth, soft lighter carbonation and dry finish. Sweet taste, moderate bitter, light warmth in the finish. Toffee. Solid, interesting barrel-aged strong ale. Much more complex and bitter than expected. Clove, and dry wood tannic notes. Glad for the chance to have tried this, exceeded expectations.

Clear dark amber with an earthy rustic malt undertone with some red wine oak tones and a wee bit of raisin. The flavor is dry and earthy with some mellow red wine undertones and a touch of earthy oak, smooth and balanced though a bit 2-dimensional. I think the red wine barrel kinda flattens out the complexity of it and makes it a touch simplistic. A bit earthy and rustic, little else.

16oz goblet at Lucky Lie LoDo. Hazy dark amber, lacing white head. Nose is a little minty, woody, worm wood, mild nail polish, menthol. Flavor is similar, malty, a little red licorice, menthol, mint toothpaste, grass, herbs. Full, sticky finish.

Bottle. Pours murky auburn with a large fizzy tan head that dissipates slowly with nice lacing. Aroma is an odd mix of fruit, caramel, chili, wine. Flavor is about the same, vinaceous, a touch of chili, but not really much cinnamon. Light sweet, light astringence, not much bitterness. Medium body, a touch of heat. Interesting beverage.
