COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Stone 11.11.11 Vertical Epic Ale proved to be an eccentric diversion from our previous lineup of innovative Belgian-inspired brews. And considering we’re Stone, that’s really saying something. This unprecedented beer was brewed with cinnamon sticks and Anaheim green chilies, giving it an amazing flavor profile unlike anything that came before it. It certainly didn’t need any enhancement, but we just don’t know when to leave well enough alone (and we’ve demonstrated before that you can, indeed, improve upon perfection). So we decided to tinker with it a bit and laid a small portion to rest in wine barrels. Not wanting to limit our experiment to only red or white wine barrels, we choose both. Treat yourself to a bottle of each and compare. All in the name of science, of course...

(22 oz bottle) Impressive aroma--white wine and chilies; deep amber appearance with a tan, light foam head; taste of white wine with lots of chili but no heat; lively, quick fizz on the palate; overall, interesting but no appeal beyond a taster ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The nose was awesome on this; you could almost confuse it with white wine. Very fruity, mostly grapes of course. Poured nice with an orange-y-red colour and a mild head. The taste....well....overall ti was decent but it was rather hot. Lots of booze in there but it didn’t stop from yeast notes, a bit of grape, some spice, a little oak.

Amber pour, off white head. Grapes, cinnamon, chili, oak, odd spice...just odd all the way around. I don’t think the base beer marries well with white wine at all.

500mL bottle, pours an opaque reddish amber with a small beige head. Aroma is full of vinous notes, booze and candied sugar. Flavour brings out strong white wine notes, some Belgian yeast, candied sugar and loads of booze. Extremely boozy body, with a fairly prominent vinous quality as well. Quite hot, but still drinkable. Decent.

I liked this one. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Smells of wood and holiday spices. Taste is smooth and light with some spiciness and earthy tones with hints of cinnamon and that burn that you only seem to get with wine. Goes down with a little burn.

Bottle shared at a local tasting, thanks Brad! Pours a clear dark brown, just like the other 2, the white wine comes through on the nose with some oak and yeast, the flavor is pretty sweet compared to the others, some yeast and oak in the finish, pretty decent stuff.

Bottle @ Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens, Escondido, CA. Pours a dark amber color with a small white head. Has a fruity spicy woody wine and dark fruit aroma. Sweetish malty spicy yeasty woody white wine flavor. Has a sweetish malty woody wine and dark fruit finish.

Bottle @ Oakquinox 2013. Cloudy amber pour with an off-white. Interesting aroma that is very spice forward. Smells of cinnamon and chili peppers. Some white wine, a light tartness, some orange, and a bit of wood and grass. There’s a mild heat/spiciness to the flavor. Lots of cinnamon, some tart lemon, chili pepper, and wine. Moderate wood and grass with a fair amount of sweetness.

500 mL bottle at Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens, served in a stem glass. Pours hazy orange-amber with a small off-white head that fades to a thin cover and leaves a small amount of fine lace. On the nose there are big notes of grape and sour apple, along with caramel malts, oak flowers, hops and subtle spice. The flavour is moderately sweet with rich caramel malts, oak and fruit. Subtle notes of sour fruit and oaky white wine barrels build towards the end. There is a very subtle spiciness in the background. The finish is long, fruity and oaky with white wine notes and subtle spice. On the palate it is full in body with a smooth, creamy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is a great barrel aged improvement on the base beer; the spiciness has mellowed and the white wine barrel adds an extra layer of complexity. Beautiful. 2013-03-19
