5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Pours auburn red with small light tan fizz. Smells malted, a bit earthy from the yeast, with hints of cinnamon and chilies. Tastes of sweet malts, with a strong cinnamon flavor and hints of chilies underneath. Full-bodied with a smooth texture and mild mouth-carbonation, Stone Vertical Epic 11.11.11 finishes with some sweet chili notes and a soft cinnamon bite.

This beer...boy I tell ya. I tried it last year and it was good, nothing to write home about - typical Stone concoction. But now, trying it a year later, much closer to the one year aging mark, it is delicious. A thick but not oppressively heavy beer that leaves the lips to be licked for later if let to dry. The alcohol is hardly present, just a whisper in the background of the beautiful synchronous cacophony that is the collaboration between the malts, peppers, and hops. Extremely well balanced, the pepper flavor crawls into the middle of the taste without overtly calling attention to itself. Will say again >> Balanced. this dark coffee/slight ruby opalescence lends itself to my belly fully, and I fully appreciate the brewers at Stone for this delight. Cheers!

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aromas of purple grapes, cherries, stone fruits, and subtle banana; very characteristic of a quadrupel. A soft red with orange highlights, head is small but retains well, and with very sticky lacing, like a soft cheese. Flavors of booze, earthy, raw coffee, nutmeg, all spice, pink peppercorns, and cinnamon; dry and somewhat savory. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, and finishes with a spicy, predominantly cinnamon finish.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: DEC 22, 2012 22 oz. bottle- Pours dark autumn brown but ruby red when held up to the light, it has a thick creamy off white head, the lace looks like it’s going to stick around as well. The aroma is chilies, very nice, I also detect subtle cinnamon but I am not sure If I would have detected that if not for the description on the bottle, man those chilies really resonate, love it. The flavor is definitely more cinnamon than the aroma, and the chilies are still there, there is a decent amount of heat burn after the swallow. I am detecting a grain off note mid palate, which is a little surprising. Overall I loved this beer, the aroma more than the taste, but this beer is very young, I can not wait to rate this again in the year to come. Rerate, 12-22-12- Aroma is still nice, green chilies, I love it, stays the same. Appearance stays the same too, taste is awesome, green chilies with a nice heat burn, it goes up by one point, from an 8 to a 9, nice! Palate remains the same, overall does too. Nice beer still, maybe better.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Pours a hazy mahogany red with a short lived off white head. Aroma is malty and fruity. Flavor is big and malty with a spicy background with just the right bite. The finish leaves a little burn in the throat from the chiles. This would go well with flame grilled red meat (especially bison).
TIP: Let this beer warm a little after pouring to bring out the full flavors.

Stone comes to surprise me every year with the vertical epic. Last year’s Belgian Strong was fantastic and this year’s does not disappoint, This beer has a nice nose. Smells of booze typical of a belgian strong. Nose is very strong cant pick out all that’s going on. Flavor in this beer is huge as well. Nice Sweet booze note followed by a nice spicy cinnamon. I imagine the spice comes from the chilies. Good beer will rate agin after i have had a few more.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: DEC 22, 2012 Bomber. Pours a beautiful almost ruby red with a medium beige head with good retention; leaves a little lace. The Belgian yeast imparts banana, bubblegum and clove in the nose; it’s also a bit nutty with dark fruit and the cinnamon is prominent. The taste is a flavor-explosion of pure beer goodness. It’s meaty and sweet at first before a medium-level bitterness takes over. The cinnamon is high in the mix but it’s not overbearing. I don’t taste anything resembling a chili in here, but I’m not exactly sure what an Anaheim chili tastes like. This might be the best Vertical Epic yet. It’s definitely interesting. Addendum: the chilies made themselves known in the second glass, making a great beer even better.
12/22/12 re-rate: Pours hazy amber with a medium beige head with good retention and lace. Aroma is initially doughy; chilies (like the diced green ones you can find in a can) come out after sitting about a minute. Taste is sweet and spicy with a nice green chile flavor. I’m getting the feeling these Vertical beers are better after aging about a year or less; after that, the oxidation sets in and they depreciate. The more recent the vintage the better these beers seem to be. 8/4/8/5/19 = 4.4

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: DEC 17, 2012 opened on 12-12-12, cellared at exactly 55 degrees since its release. Much more malt, and Belgian yeast aroma. Hints of a cherry cinnamon aroma. More of those in the flavor. A little touch of heat and pepper flavor, but much more malt and Belgian character than when it was fresh. Has aged nicely though.
This beer pours a dark copper. Aroma of malt, and almost fruit. It isn’t as harsh in the mouth as one might think, but it isn’t a smooth beer either.
Malty taste, but the peppers really shine through without being abrasive. It hides the 9.4% well, until you get about halfway through. Should be an interesting beer as it ages.

Poured from the bomber. Aroma is awesome, almost like a Lagunitas with the dark fruits. Flavor is bitter up front also has the fruity flavors. Overall, wow I think I need to buy a few more!
