Commercial Description:
We re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form. We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

On tap at Rosamunde (Mission) to kick off SF Beer Week 2010. Stoned again by their masterful craftmanship with yeast, malt, and hops. This brew is a real treat for self-righteous lovers of American-style strong, dark ale. The brew packs a full blast of bitterness to cut through the 8.7 ABV. Not for the faint of heart, but the path of extremism leads to the palace of wisdom.

Bottle 22fl.oz.
Clear dark red brown color with a large, frothy to creamy, good lacing, fully lasting, beige to light brown head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, chocolate, heavy hoppy, grapefruit, grass. Flavor is heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20100112]

$7 / 22oz bomb Stone rarely lets me down, but I’m not so sure about this one. It is drinkable, don’t get me wrong, but I am ambivalent. Has some really weird flavors I can’t quite pin down--cough syrup maybe? Yeah, not sure what to think. It’s sort of a messed up version of their Arrogant Bastard. Can’t recommend.

Bottle. Black with a huge creamy and lacing light brown head. Roast and citrus aroma. Roasted malts flavours, some milky sweetness (oats?), with citrussy hops as refreshers. Nice (even if the name may be pushing the envelope somewhat).

Sampled at High Street Grill Winter Beer Fest. Just great. From the first pour and floral aroma to the bitter dry finish, this is top of the line goodness from our friends in CA.

Sample at the Rake, Southwark, July 2009. Very dark colour. Seemed just like a big IPA, but dark. At the time I wrote “nice but unnecessary”, suggesting that the darker elements didn’t really bring anything extra to the party. But, since then I have tried a few more dark IPA style beers (even if they are defined as an American Strong) and been very impressed by a couple. So perhaps I didn’t really “get” the concept at the time I tried this one. Or perhaps it really didn’t benefit from the darker rendition. Either way, I need to revisit this beer.

22oz/650ml bomber poured into a snifter. It looks like an imperial stout at first. Opaque dark brown body, with a nice light brown head and some visible carbonation. Good lacing and head retention. The aroma brings you an incredible combination of floral, juicy citrus-like hoppiness, with some caramel tones, and a nice rich roastiness, with hints of dark chocolate and espresso. From the first sip, you might mistake it for a nice, full-flavoured west-coast IPA, with a good hop bite and some juicy grapefruit notes. The finish, however, has both the bitterness and some nice lingering chocolatey and coffee-like notes. There is also some dark fruit undertones, and a little bit of smokiness, too. Simply outstanding and extremely satisfying! The beer coats the palate, very pleasant in the mouth! For a 8.9% beer, the alcohol is very well-masked! Just because it is so full-flavoured and intense, the drinkability is unlike that of a session ale. But, mind you, it drinks very smoothly and with little effort. This is easily the best beer I’ve tried in months, and I try quite a few each month! How about a round of applause for Stone?
