4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours almost black with a thick brown head. Aroma is of ginger bread, nutmeg, and dark roasted malts. Taste follows the nose with lots of ginger bread and pumpkin like spices. The mouth feel is medium-thick and coats well. This beer is very stout like, similar to pumpkin stouts. Overall a very good beer.

Dark brown pour. Slightly oily. The smell has a good dose of spice and yeast. My first thought was gingerbread on tasting...lots of cinnamon, anise, orange, clove taste. Pretty standard carbonation and a slick mouthfeel. Interesting and tasty.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Appearance: Dark brown/black with finger thick tan head.
Aroma: Cinnamon, allspice, clove, orange.
Taste: Medium bitter and sweetness with low sourness and a slight saltiness.
Palate: Thick grainy texture, medium/heavy body, average carbonation, lingering dry, spicy, clove finish.
Comments: Tasty and glass lace. The spice is very strong and generally the beer reminds me more of a stout than a Belgium style abbey beer due to the heaviness and average carbonation.

On tap at Tribes Alehouse. Pour is black with a medium sized khaki head. Aroma of cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and roast. Flavor is tangy and sweet with notes of citrus, belgian yeast, spice, roast, and dark fruit. Finish and aftertaste is cinnamon sticks and gingerbread.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured a dark brown with garnet highlights, a nice sized and very persistent tan head with good lacing. Aroma of the spices like allspice, ginger and cnnamon with some almost charred malt. Taste follows nose with the spices and malt and adds some cocoa and molasses. Finishes with some roastiness and lingering spices and drier than expected. Mouthfeel is medium/full with moderate/high carbonation. I think letting this age for over a year was a good idea. May have allowed the flavors to meld better.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured from a bomber with a jet black color and a very healthy foamy tan head. Has a huge combination of smells: cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, banana. Taste is also highly complex, with cinnamon and ginger and medium bitterness in the finish. Has a full body, smooth mouthfeel. This is the best pumpkin beer I’ve had that’s not really a pumpkin beer. Among my favorite spiced ales, just a close second behind Unibroue’s La Terrible.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
2012 bottle to a tulip glass. Pours a dark mahogany brown with a thick cinnamon tan head. Smell is allspice, cinnamon and slightly herbaceous. Taste is allspice, cinnamon, chocolate, some dark fruits and herbal bitterness at the end. Spices take the main stage. Full mouthful with a dry, tannic feeling at the end. Very stout-like.

Stout-like in many ways! Very dark. There’s notes like bubblegum amid the spice, and I get a decent amount of clove in the aroma. Solid palate, not particularly sweet. Good balance, and a nice finish to the vertical epic series. Bottle.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Rated 3/14/14. Bottle. Pours ink black. Small creamy brown head, partly lasting with good lace. Aroma features spices as described, along with some roastiness, molasses, fudge. Lighter full body. Spicy, soft sweetness, leading to earthy, dry hoppiness, ash, leading to chocolatey roasty. Alcohol warming in the chest. Finish is light mild bitter, spiced, semi dry, some unintrusive alcohol. Awesome complexity. Amazing how much flavor there is here. Some of the spice ’whomp’ has probably been subdued over the last year plus. Really need to take your time with it to truly appreciate it.
