4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Lost my tasting notes on this, so I’m going from memory.
Pours a dark, brownish color with a nice tan head. Scent is complex, lots of spice and citrus, some yeasty earthy tones as well. Flavor is nice and sweet, up front. Raisins, gingerbread, earthiness followed by a nice balance of bitter hops in the end. Medium bodied with a nice, smooth finish.
Stone finished off their Vertical Epics with a great one.

Stout-like in many ways! Very dark. There’s notes like bubblegum amid the spice, and I get a decent amount of clove in the aroma. Solid palate, not particularly sweet. Good balance, and a nice finish to the vertical epic series. Bottle.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Rated 3/14/14. Bottle. Pours ink black. Small creamy brown head, partly lasting with good lace. Aroma features spices as described, along with some roastiness, molasses, fudge. Lighter full body. Spicy, soft sweetness, leading to earthy, dry hoppiness, ash, leading to chocolatey roasty. Alcohol warming in the chest. Finish is light mild bitter, spiced, semi dry, some unintrusive alcohol. Awesome complexity. Amazing how much flavor there is here. Some of the spice ’whomp’ has probably been subdued over the last year plus. Really need to take your time with it to truly appreciate it.

Slightly smells like a baking muffin. Strong spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove.
Medium body taste, starts off a little sweet, spices, but ends a little more roasty, drier. The spices sweetness lingers in the background though.

Pours a deep black with a thick tan head. Lots of roasted notes with a dry finish. Nice amount of bitterness, not too much. Well balanced. Very nice beer.

22 oz poured into tulip. Very dark brown body with two finger khaki head. Smells bit of alcohol, dark fruit, nutmeg and dominant allspice. Tastes very similar with bit of roast malt and burn from the alcohol and spices. Medium mouthfeel with smooth, dry bitter finish. Not a bad beer, very warming!

Nice cinnamon orange zest at the beginning. Good wintry spices, and the dryness prevents it from getting too deep/rich or boozy. A hint of minty chocolate towards the end. Nice.

Had back in 2012. Don’t remember this one being too standoutish, but I do remember the nose catching my attention heavily. As a finish to the Epic Series, it wasn’t as banger as I wanted it to be, I really think 10/10/10 was the ish as far as I’m concerned!

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
pours very dark brown, almost black, with a small creamy beige head, good retention and lacing. powdery cocoa and doughy if not sweetish chocolate malts, booze, intensely spicy - loads of cinnamon, tingling ginger, mint - cakey, pine, resin and grass. moderate carbonation, medium body - oily, sticky, slightly harsh spicy-piney finish. thankfully, i have only tasted the last batch of swill under the vertical epic portfolio - and won’t be tasting some more ever again. DP - for all five that we were.
