As with any good epic, herein lies the promise of larger-than-life experiences, heroics, and twists and turns as the adventure unfolds. This bottle-conditioned ale is chapter eleven. Now is the time to enjoy it in a “vertical” tasting side by side with its ten Stone Vertical Epic Ale brethren! Each one unique to its year of release. Each with its own “twist & turn” in the plot line. Each one released one year, one month and one day from the previous year’s edition. This year’s Stone Vertical Epic Ale is the very last one. Yep, this is it. The final chapter. Or as they say on the last slide in some old films: “Fin.” No worries though: this edition is particularly well-suited for prolonging the experience, as it’s as cellarable as any in the series, or more. In this, the final edition, you can expect a perfectly balance *womp* of spices: cinnamon, ginger, allspice, sweet orange peel, clove (only a little!) and rosehips, all in the context of a dark Belgian style abbey-ish beer…but not as sweet. Dry even. Stone style. Thanks for coming on this Epic Stone-style journey with us! You can rest assured there will be new adventures to come…

Sniffer pour, deep dark brown with full finger khaki head. Nose is quite spiced, ginger, cloves and all that stuff I never go big on. Flavor is similar, quite spiced, sharp... Smooth body, not too heavy.

12-12-12, tap. Black with thin frothy head. Nose smells like an orange with cloves stuck in it. More cloves than orange. Thin body and mildly fizzy. Not a fan. Tastes like sucking on a whole clove. Very drying and bitter. Smells great for a Christmas beer. Not a big fan though. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bomber. "Tastes like christmas" - Kristen-mas. "Smells like my armpit when it was drunk and sexy" - Kristen-mas. Reminiscent of Anchor Xmas for sure. Chocolatier and roastier. A bit weird. Sweet, but with a hop pellet-esque bitterness.

UPDATED: NOV 1, 2014 Sort of mixed feelings about the end of the vertical epic. Great concept. Some of the beers were worthy of the concept. Others, perhaps not. But at least now I don’t feel like I have to run out and buy two of any beer for a while. Pours a very dark brown, bordering on black. Aroma is pumpkin spice and faint chocolate. Flavor is a match. The clove doesn’t overwhelm, but it is definitely there. The allspice and cinnamon definitely show. A bit of a bread, chocolate malt backbone, dry on the finish. Just a bit too spiced for my tastes. It might fall down some over time, but I think that since it does finish dry, it may not be quite the good ager that some Belgian abbey beers are. I wish they had ended on something that was really truly meant to be consumed on the spot as the end of the epic as opposed to one that was more of a setting down brew. RERATE: Screaming clove. Really a poutpourri blast for me.

opened on 12-12-12. Thicker black pour than I’d have thought. Nose is all spices, somewhat indistinguishable. Harsh spices cover the palate, and a finishing spicy bitterness. Not the best from this series, but still decent.

Bomber poured a clear dark reddish brown nearly black with a small lasting brown head. Aromas of cinnamon, clove, allspice, carmel and dark chocolate. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of carmel, cinnamon, clove, allspice, roastiness and dark chocolate with a smooth dry lingering roasty spiced finish.

Bottle. Pours an opaque dark brown, almost black body with a nice frothy light brown head that faded to a thin ring. The nose is huge on the spices, lots of cinnamon, allspice, and ginger for sure. Almost smells like a pumpkin beer. Very malty smelling with a little sweetness and belgian yeastiness. The flavor is a little overly sweet and ridiculously over spiced for sure. Tastes like they just dumped the whole inventory of spices in here, not a whole lot of subtlety going on with this guy. Very sweet with pretty well hidden alcohol, but then again, with all those spices, ya can’t taste much anything else going on in here. Rather thick and almost syrupy with soft fizzy carbonation. This one actually might do much better with a hefty amount of age on it, shame they didn’t start out this series with something like this.

22 ounce bottle purchased from Nugget in West Sacramento. The aroma on this is bizarre. I get some significant lime in the nose. I also get a little bit of a chile peppery aroma, too. Floral notes are also there, with a slight, underlying roasty and chocolate maltiness. Bizarre aroma. Gorgeous beer. Opaque black body with a large, creamy, brown head. Good retention. Starts super sweet and milky, with a ton of chocolate creamy flavors in the middle. Quite sweet, and sticky, full body in the middle. Finishes with a dash of chile pepper flavor, and light spiciness. Light floral flavors come through late. This is a really thick, sweet, decadent beer. Unfortunately, it is a bit all over the place, and not overly enjoyable

Banana, cherry, and bubblegum on the aroma and palate. Instense aroma. Tan fizzy, creamy head. Well balanced.

22oz bottle. Had this during a full 020202 - 121212 vertical. Poured a black color with an off white head. Dark fruits, spices, ginger, citrus, and fruity.
