COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Who knew a worldwide hop shortage in 2008 would give rise to such a memorable, delicious beer? When it came time to craft a commemorative offering for our 12th anniversary, we decided to trade in the bitterness of hops for the bitterness of unsweetened chocolate, and paired that with flaked oats. Featuring a thick, rich, roasty mouthfeel and chocolate-heavy flavors and aromas, this onyx-colored, malt-forward beauty became an instant classic that shares space on our liquid trophy case alongside our hop-focused fan favorites. Rebrewed for our 20th Anniversary Encore Series.

Hops: Summit, Willamette, Galena & Ahtanum

Black pour (duh), decent tan head. Aroma has some cocoa, roasted malt, some smoked notes and alcohol aromatics. Flavor follows but is lower on chocolate than expected - it should be more up front. The smoke aspect almost gets me to smoked porter. Some fruity esters come in, a bit of dry cocoa. Mouthfeel is dry but a bit of silky smooth, lower body than expected. This beer opens up and gets more complex as it warms. A nice beer, although the end result is not quite meeting the name/description.

Well, Stone promises bitter chocolate and you really can’t be disappointed with what Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout delivers. Dark, thick pour. It does indeed smell and taste like unsweetened cocoa. It blends nicely with the rich, full body. There are some interesting smoke and umami flavors that come through. Overall, it’s really intriguing. Oatmeal Stouts, especially boozy ones, tend to go a bit sweet. The bitter chocolate adds some sharpness, and even near-fruitiness, to the profile. A great anniversary release.

P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, O- A unique smoke and umami flavor and aroma that I wasn’t expecting. Definitely some bitter cocoa in there but I didn’t that smoked porter feel to it. Decent.

Bomber. Pours a ruby reddish black with a resilient beige head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, oatmeal. Flavor is chocolate, oat. Finish is strong bitterness, roasted hazelnut, burnt caramel. Lingering strong chocolate bitterness. Medium to full body, velvety and oily mouthfeel, weak carbonation. So very solid!

Helluva beer. On the dry, bitter side. Chocolate comessage through nicely, but can’t discern the oatmeal. Great finish.

Tap at Stone in Asagaya (5th year anniversary event). Pitch black with a half finger of tan head that lingers. 80 percent cacao nose, roasted cacao nib and prune dominate. Creamy on the palate with more lots of roasty bitterness and light dark fruit sourness. Bold and roasty finish that has a long lingering bitterness. Solid.

650 ml bottle. Pours black with moderate tan head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of black coffee, sweet dark fruit almost raisiny, dry dark malts and a bit of alcohol. Flavors of dark acidic chocolate, vanilla, light licorice, and lots of roasted malts. Very good.
