3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 elnadeau (786) - Laguna Niguel, California, USA - JUL 27, 2008Black pour (duh), decent tan head. Aroma has some cocoa, roasted malt, some smoked notes and alcohol aromatics. Flavor follows but is lower on chocolate than expected - it should be more up front. The smoke aspect almost gets me to smoked porter. Some fruity esters come in, a bit of dry cocoa. Mouthfeel is dry but a bit of silky smooth, lower body than expected. This beer opens up and gets more complex as it warms. A nice beer, although the end result is not quite meeting the name/description.
4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 chinchill (659) - South Carolina, USA - JUN 15, 2013
Pint on tap at the Most Arrogant Bar Bash at Barleys in Greenville SC. Woohoo!
Opaque black with a modest sized but durable mocha brown head.
The aroma is sweet, with an obvious bourbon barrel component. The bourbon barrel is even more obvious in tasting, and lends a nice, albeit high ABV quality, to the flavor. Still, the high ABV is partly hidden. Lightly sweet and highly flavorful. Very good complexity and balance. Long lasting aftertaste.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 DrSilverworm (2939) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - JUN 12, 2013
22oz bottle, shared by brew3crew. Dark brown more clear color. Thin lighter brown head, couple dots of lace. Big, chewy texture. Bigger body. Lighter carbonation. Very interesting herbal raw mint leaf aroma. Dark chocolate, light oatmeal. Good bitterness, light bitter sweet. Very light alcohol in the finish. Very light coffee note. Still drinking good. Very happy for the opportunity to try this.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 b3shine (2438) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - JUN 9, 2013
Bomber to snifter (shared by brew3crew). Looks good; a fairly opaque black with sticky beige lacing. Smells solid; dark malt and chocolate with a bit of mint and oxidization. Tastes like it smells with a good mouthfeel. Enjoyable.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Treebs (733) - , Illinois, USA - FEB 28, 2013
22 oz. bottle served in a Deschutes snifter. Thanks stxSS07 for the share.
A: Pours a dark black color with a dark mocha head forming on the pour. It recedes quickly to a thin ring that leaves some splotchy lace down the glass.
S: Some oxidation as you would expect, but in a sherry kind of way. No real paper or cardboard notes, but slightly dark and pretty fruity. Dark chocolate bitterness with some dried oats.
T: Much like the nose. Bitter dark chocolate, steel cut oats, light dark fruit with minimal oxidation. The booze is well hidden behind a touch a char.
M: Medium thick bodied with a lower carbonation level. Smooth and creamy finish.
O: This held up very nicely and the slight oxidation gave it a dark fruit character that complimented the bitter dark chocolate nicely.
Serving type: bottle
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 LoFi (1345) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - JAN 24, 2013
Bottle from trade with Hop20, cheers buddy!
Pitch black with a dark brown head.
Aroma: chocolate mousse, coffee, dark fruit, licorice.
Taste: loads of licorice, cocoa, dark wine gums, coffee, milk chocolate, oatmeal cookies with raisins, creamy.
Full-bodied, smooth.
Man, this is so delicious! If this was bitter from the chocolate when it was released, then instead time has made it very smooth and well-balanced. Thanks again for suggesting this!
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 maneliquor (1696) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - DEC 22, 2012
Bottle shared with Aj over christmas. Pours black with a small tan head which quickly disappears. Nose shows bitter dark chocolate, oats, a touch of alcohol, plum, raisins/sultanas and vanilla. Taste is sweet vanilla and raisins. Like chocolate covered sultanas but boozy. Bitter sweet finish to this one. Higher carbonation than I was expecting. A very well made beer. Not sure if the ageing has improved it or now but it is good stuff
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Nate (3358) - Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 9, 2012
From July 2008 bomber. Alcohol, vanilla, licorice, chocolate and chocolate malts, some papery essence or a bit of oxidation. No obvious hop variety aroma. Deep dark black opaque with thin lacing cocoa-tan head. Heavy body, almost chewy, with medium carbonation and light alcoholic warming. Starts with carbonic acidity, mild sweetness, lot of dry bitter chocolate, licorice, and molasses. A bit of coffee and smoke, too. Tangy finish with nutty bitterness and light chalky chocolate notes in the after. Certainly not over sweet.

This is from a while ago... Pours nearly opaque with a bright, light tan head. The aroma is filled with chocolate and caramel. On the palate, the chocolate and toffee also show the characteristic slickness of an oatmeal stout. The abv is extremely well hidden. Great stuff!
