4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cocoa and coffee aroma, very dark pour, dark head (darker than a lot of beers themselves!), quick bitter finishing out into medium oatmeal taste. This beer doesn’t have the noticeable alcohol taste that most high-gravity beers exhibit.

Shared at a tasting hosted by Steve Hackley on September 25. Thanks Steve! This was poured from a 22 oz bottle. I didnít know this was an anniversary beer! The pour is a medium black out of the bottle with a thin ring of dark khaki colored head and no lace. I am a little excited that there is carbonation. The aroma though, is where it kind of starts to fall apart. There is a lot of oxidization. Light leather and tobacco kind of dominate this. There is a little booziness and some light chocolate. I can see the bitter chocolate part of this, because itís there. Itís light though. I think this wouldíve been excellent a couple years ago. The flavor is similar. There is a resounding bitterness here without a whole lot else. There is some light chocolate and a little roast. Booze is definitely present and a hint of leather. The mouth feel is thin and watery. No sense of an oatmeal stout here. Itís lightly carbonated and kind of runs like black water. There is incredible disappointment here. The aftertaste is all bitter, with some light chocolate. Itís quick fading and oxidized as fuck.

I pulled this one out of the back of the basement refrigerator, not realizing a) that it was an anniversary beer, b) that I hadnít rated it, and c) that it is an Imperial Stout. I donít think it quite as big as an Imperial Stout (certainly not as thick) but it also has better balance, with a moderate sweetness that didnít stand out, and a good balance of roasted and chocolate flavors. Very good. Bottle.

Great beer. This one was a little over five years aged and great tasting. Very smooth beer and so balanced. Great looking, smelling, and tasting.

Bottle dated July 2008. It poured a dark black color with a tan head. The aroma was of bittersweet chocolate and some dark fruits. The taste was of dark chocolates, roasted malts and more fruit. Really held up well and very tasty.

Bottle: Bottled July 2008, enjoyed January 2015. Six & a half years old. Thanks to Sean for this relic. Turbid, viscous, oily black pour. A cherry tinted, leathery tan head forms, a few millimeters tall, then fades quickly to a thin collar. Carbonation, nice! Aroma is very nice, including notes of dark chocolate, bitter cocoa nibs, creamy oats, a touch of alcohol, molasses, & a hint of scorched brown sugar. No oxidation on the nose, very good sign. Tastes like liquid dark chocolate. Hits up front with a touch of borderline milky sweetness, but quickly transitions into a darker, more bitter chocolate with warming hints of booze & anise hiding in the periphery. Oats, brown sugar, coffee bean, & a touch of roasted malts treading towards the finish, though the aftertaste still lingers heavy with 80% cacao chocolate. Smooth, oily mouth feel, just on the fringe of chewy. This bad boy has held up well. REALLY well. They need to take a step back from the IPAs for a minute & do some more stout variations like this. Awesome.

"didnít realize this beer was so strong (or classified as an imperial, as it says Oatmeal & Chocolate on the bottle)...oh well. Definitely bitter, but that plays well with the sweetness from the chocolate, and covers up the fact thatís itís 9%. Iíd compare it to Rogueís Chocolate Stout, slightly more bitter, and apparently stronger. Quite good. 1/09 - tried on tap for the first time...incredibly smooth...better than the bottle. tap-4.5, bottle-4.3"

Like eating a very bitter Hershey bar. Over the top. Not subtle. Full bodied, creamy. Use earplugs.
