COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Who knew a worldwide hop shortage in 2008 would give rise to such a memorable, delicious beer? When it came time to craft a commemorative offering for our 12th anniversary, we decided to trade in the bitterness of hops for the bitterness of unsweetened chocolate, and paired that with flaked oats. Featuring a thick, rich, roasty mouthfeel and chocolate-heavy flavors and aromas, this onyx-colored, malt-forward beauty became an instant classic that shares space on our liquid trophy case alongside our hop-focused fan favorites. Rebrewed for our 20th Anniversary Encore Series.

Hops: Summit, Willamette, Galena & Ahtanum

this beer is stupid good. there’s no way around it. blacker than life before Jesus, with a cleveland browns ballcap to boot on a head. this thing smells like whoa. then it tastes like whoa. and then, when you go in again, more whoa. huge chocolate aroma and flavors. very dark, nearly burnt chocolate. my first impression was charred liquid fudge, but in a good way. the alcohol burn hit the back of the throat fairly hard in the first few sips, mellowed in the middle, then rears its hothead in any serious pause. yes, the alcohol bites here. but that’s okay. coffee and bleeding heart juice round out the edges making this as much of an afternoon treat as a midnight sleeping pill. i like it. my buddy here, in the flannel shirt, he likes it. we agree that, at times, the flavor is almost overpowering. while punching where it should punch and smoothing where it should smooth, sometimes it throws in a kick and belts me just below the tongue-belt. whoa. and wow. i said to my buddy josh here, just now and meaning it, "this is one of the more intense drinking experiences i’ve had." and it was. and it is. for about two more sips.

Redux draft at Bittercreek. The pour was beautiful with a pretty reverse cascade thing going on.. 2 finger head is very dark brown.. even for a big stout... brew is very very dark... no light escapes... nice lacing.. dries leaving crusty bubbles. Aroma is deep.. coffee and chocolate... smell improves immensely as it warms.. melted dark chocolate and cocoa nibs... yummy... even smells smooth and creamy... somewhat more stout characteristics appear than the expected chocolate. Flavor is huge... I honestly was not expecting something this rich... The bitterness is also huge.. but it’s not a hop bitterness.. more of an astringent (not in a bad way) cocoa presence... like a strong espresso with a couple squares of Hershey’s dark melted and mixed in.

22 oz bottle consumed ~9 months from 15 Jan. 2016 bottling date using a Belgian snifter. Appearance: Pours essentially black color; clear but sits opaque in the glass; aggressive pour produced a light brown head < 1 cm thick. Spots and streaks of lacing. Soon reduces to a partial coat and ring. Aroma: Dark and milk chocolates, chocolate liqueur, dark roasted grains, toffee, brown sugar and hints of vanilla. Flavor: Rich with a mix of flavors dominated by dark roasted grains and chocolates. Mild-medium pronounced bitterness; trace of burnt grain and smoke. Subtle toffee and dark dried fruits. Feel: Thick and full bodied; some alcohol heat and harshness but smooth underneath this. Moderate carbonation. Overall: Bitter-sweet dark chocolates and dark roasted malts in good balance. Well chosen encore!

This poured a deep black body with a thin dark tan head that left very little lace. Aroma was really nice chocolate was the most prevelant with hints of alcohol, oatmeal and espresso, as it warmed fruit notes came through. Flavor of bitter chocolate throughout but the oatmeal makes a brief apperance and a alcohol finish. Overall a pretty good brew, the bitterness was a little over the top. Fat på CBC-2016. Smak och doft av choklad, kaffe, vanilj, karamell, rostad malt med toner av lakrits och aska. Kärv, fin kropp och sötma. Bra!

Inky black pour with a thin tan sticky head. Lovely roast and bitter cocoa aromas with a kiss of booze and earthy tones. Mellow and boozy flavor that’s got some roast and bittersweet dark chocolate, a kiss of coffee, and dark black malts. Boozy roasty bittersweet chocolate finish.
