4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
this beer is stupid good. there’s no way around it. blacker than life before Jesus, with a cleveland browns ballcap to boot on a head. this thing smells like whoa. then it tastes like whoa. and then, when you go in again, more whoa. huge chocolate aroma and flavors. very dark, nearly burnt chocolate. my first impression was charred liquid fudge, but in a good way. the alcohol burn hit the back of the throat fairly hard in the first few sips, mellowed in the middle, then rears its hothead in any serious pause. yes, the alcohol bites here. but that’s okay. coffee and bleeding heart juice round out the edges making this as much of an afternoon treat as a midnight sleeping pill. i like it. my buddy here, in the flannel shirt, he likes it. we agree that, at times, the flavor is almost overpowering. while punching where it should punch and smoothing where it should smooth, sometimes it throws in a kick and belts me just below the tongue-belt. whoa. and wow. i said to my buddy josh here, just now and meaning it, "this is one of the more intense drinking experiences i’ve had." and it was. and it is. for about two more sips.

Bottle dated July 2008. It poured a dark black color with a tan head. The aroma was of bittersweet chocolate and some dark fruits. The taste was of dark chocolates, roasted malts and more fruit. Really held up well and very tasty.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle: Bottled July 2008, enjoyed January 2015. Six & a half years old. Thanks to Sean for this relic. Turbid, viscous, oily black pour. A cherry tinted, leathery tan head forms, a few millimeters tall, then fades quickly to a thin collar. Carbonation, nice! Aroma is very nice, including notes of dark chocolate, bitter cocoa nibs, creamy oats, a touch of alcohol, molasses, & a hint of scorched brown sugar. No oxidation on the nose, very good sign. Tastes like liquid dark chocolate. Hits up front with a touch of borderline milky sweetness, but quickly transitions into a darker, more bitter chocolate with warming hints of booze & anise hiding in the periphery. Oats, brown sugar, coffee bean, & a touch of roasted malts treading towards the finish, though the aftertaste still lingers heavy with 80% cacao chocolate. Smooth, oily mouth feel, just on the fringe of chewy. This bad boy has held up well. REALLY well. They need to take a step back from the IPAs for a minute & do some more stout variations like this. Awesome.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
"didn’t realize this beer was so strong (or classified as an imperial, as it says Oatmeal & Chocolate on the bottle)...oh well. Definitely bitter, but that plays well with the sweetness from the chocolate, and covers up the fact that’s it’s 9%. I’d compare it to Rogue’s Chocolate Stout, slightly more bitter, and apparently stronger. Quite good. 1/09 - tried on tap for the first time...incredibly smooth...better than the bottle. tap-4.5, bottle-4.3"

Like eating a very bitter Hershey bar. Over the top. Not subtle. Full bodied, creamy. Use earplugs.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled. Tucked away in the closet for the past 5 years, got some age on it. Pours silky black with minimal carbonation. Aroma of anise, dark fruit and chocolate. There is a slight character of wet cardboard/band-aid that I take as slight oxidation. Flavor is tasty sweet and smoky up front with tones of coffee and chocolates underneath. Fades rather quickly and overall seems a bit thin. Could be the age. More strange funk notes on the end of the flavor profile. Medium mouthfeel. Pretty good; I really wish I would have rated it fresh.

Thanks Frostyone! bottle pours deep black with a small light foamy brown head. Nose is moderate fruits with primarily plums, and ripe peaches. Also aroma is complex with almost a sticky sweet burnt coffee with mild grilled chocolate bars. Flacor is some smooth sweet sugary malts and bitter, and mildly acidic roast notes. Dark chocolate come through nicely but is masked slightly by bitter hops. Lovely at 4 years old.
