COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Who knew a worldwide hop shortage in 2008 would give rise to such a memorable, delicious beer? When it came time to craft a commemorative offering for our 12th anniversary, we decided to trade in the bitterness of hops for the bitterness of unsweetened chocolate, and paired that with flaked oats. Featuring a thick, rich, roasty mouthfeel and chocolate-heavy flavors and aromas, this onyx-colored, malt-forward beauty became an instant classic that shares space on our liquid trophy case alongside our hop-focused fan favorites. Rebrewed for our 20th Anniversary Encore Series.

Hops: Summit, Willamette, Galena & Ahtanum

Like eating a very bitter Hershey bar. Over the top. Not subtle. Full bodied, creamy. Use earplugs.

Poured from a bottle. Pours a black with a medium sized tan head. Rich and creamy texture with a slightly oily body. Aroma of dark chocolate and roasted malt. Taste is burnt, bitter, and some smoky undertones. Not as good as I had hoped for or what I had heard. Disappointed.

Tastes of bitter dark chocolate, not the sweet chocolate I wanted. Better chocolate stouts to be had. I would drink this as a regular stout.

Smells bitter, chocolatey, boozy with a hint of oatmeal. Jet black with a tight ring of brown foam. The taste is also bitter with a strong oat flavor, roasty/burnt, some chocolate and just enough sweetness at the end to balance it out. Weak palate, thin with too much carbonation for an imperial stout. Interesting beer, great concept but just not for me. Iím a huge Stone fan, but I donít know why they brought this one back.

Pours a brown-black with a thick and foamy medium brown head. Smells of chocolate and cookies. Taste is bitter and sweet - chocolate dominates, smooth cookies and flowery hops - very rich mouthfeel.

A fair stout. I almost didnít get it because of the "bitter" disclosed right up front....It is def bitter, however, the chocolate makes it a pleasant flavor. My signature comment applies...I wish it was thicker. I prefer a little sweetness which it doesnít have and it wasnít expected. The only complaints I have are ones of simple personal tastes...overall a fine stout otherwise.

Tastes like a sweet stout with a bitter chocolate bite. Oats, chocolate, only a hint of booziness. Great beer.

Bottled January 10, 2016.
Appearance: Pitch black body with minimal head, dark tan head on top though, light coating.
Aroma: Dark chocolate isnít shy, some dark fruits noted as well, restrained roast.
Taste: Dark chocolate is easily apparent, but not overbearing. Mild dark fruits, dry with roasted coffee and oats are actually apparent. Bitterness is balancing with mild heat on the finish.
Palate: Creamy, but moderate at the same time. Moderate carbonation.
Overall: Solid beer, nicely balanced. Great drinker, doesnít stand out though.

Tap. Black with one finger head. Dark chocolate forward stout. A bit smokey with a bitter finish. Decent, but not much more to me.
