COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When we first set out to brew the Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA, our intention was to flatter our British predecessors with an IPA honoring the style’s storied origins. Were we trying to refine our usual brash and unapologetic approach to beer making? Nah. We simply thought it would be fun to brew an IPA using nothing but imported English ingredients (admittedly, we had a tough time trying to import several thousand gallons of English river water, so we improvised with the local supply instead). What you’ve got in this bottle is a supernova of flavor with an extra layer of complexity from the beer’s soujorn in red wine barrels. You’ll be dazzled by the heady fruit and spice notes of the East Kent Goldings and Target hops, the bold flash of hop sweetness, and the alarmingly persistent bitterness. The beer’s brilliantly clean, dry finish may make you feel like you should drinking it with your pinky sticking out, but please don’t. Your British forebears didn’t do that, either.

Bottle @ Oakquinox 2013. Murky reddish/amber pour with a white head. Grass and lots of lemon on the nose. Sweet malt, oak, red wine, a hint of vanilla, and some feet. Lightly tart on both the aroma and flavor. Heavy lemon rind flavor, some sweat, grass, and a touch of pine. Light tartness, red wine, and oak. A bit of sweet malt, vanilla, and grape.

Really different and tasty. It is far sweeter than the 14th when it was fresh. There is a nearly brandy like aspect to the aroma and flavor. Dark cloudy orange, light carb. Huge flavor a bit too sweet for my preference. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Moderate to heavy sweet hop, wood and dark fruit aroma. Medium to full body with dry slick texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy smooth bittersweet and wood flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer.

500ml bottle, shared by b3shine. Hazy orange yellow color. Minimal white head. Good dots of lace. Earthy caramel hop nose. Bigger body. Smooth light carbonation. Dry finish. Red wine barrel is subtle, but you get vinous note is very nice and well blended. Not over sweet, not at all cloying. Light bitterness. Very enjoyable. Nice and smooth complex flavor, and a nice lightly vinous nose. Awesome

500 ml bottle to snifter (thanks darkmoon66). Looks good; a semi-opaque burnt-orange with thin white lacing. Smells good too; hops and sweet pale malt with wonderful red wine barrel notes. Tastes like it smells with a chewy body and a nice, dry finish. Damn fine beer!

Bottle. Clear golden orange with a thin white head. Musty earthy vegetal hops caramel and light wine barrel aroma. Thick tangy palate. Tastes of caramel, red wine, citrus, and, frankly, stale hop oil flavors with a bitter sweet earthy finish. I was wanting something better.

Bottle. Pours a clear, caramel brown with a slick of white foam. Aroma is heavy on thick, sweet toffee, caramel, dense sugary malt, light red wine with a whisp of oak, and some lingering hop bitterness. Very much presents as a hop-centric strong ale or even old ale type beer with some minor influence from the red wine barrels. Very smooth flavor dominated by dense, sweet malt rich with toffee and caramel and a shockingly strong bitter hop character that nicely contrasts the sweetness. The red wine influence is subtle and tucked into the middle of the flavor profile and provides an interesting transition between the sweet malt characteristics and the hop bitterness. Smooth, coating mouthfeel. I was fairly hesitant to buy this bottle but I do think that the beer is well done and interesting. I doubt it would have worked out this well if the red wine barrel influence was stronger. Very nice beer.
