COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We went to England this past spring as self-styled “IPA Hunters” on a mission to learn more about the confusing and often contradictory history of India Pale Ale – to look for some certainty where those before us have found mostly mystery and mercantilism. While our success in this pursuit is open to debate, there can be no question that we returned home inspired by the ghosts of Burton and by the experience of poring over 150-year old brewer’s logs handwritten in (India?) ink. Stone Brewing Co., after all, traces its lineage back to the British Empire’s brewing history: we make ales, and all of our original offerings used traditional British styles as a jumping-off point. If this seems a roundabout way of letting you know that, yes, we are in fact brewing another IPA to mark our Anniversary, well, so be it.

This one however, promises to be different! From the imported white malt to the “Burtonised” water to the rare yeast strain to the most pungent hops Kent has to offer, we used all British ingredients to brew our “Emperial” IPA.* While we may have brewed Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA with our own distinctively modern, San Diego-style touch, what good is history if you can’t rewrite it to suit your tastes?

In this case, our tastes called for highly intemperate quantities of Target, East Kent Goldings, and Boadicea hops, bestowing upon this dry-bodied ale a powerfully spicy, earthy aroma. On the palate, peppery hops assert themselves early and often, with malt sweetness making a brief appearance before being beaten back by a long, complex, and decisively bitter finish. What better way to contemplate the fate of empires past, present, and future?

*Um, except for our filtered Colorado River water, of course.

Old Review from back 8/10 - First off I love the look of this beer. You don’t see this color in a beer often. It’s like a radioactive glow. Cloudy, orange, and glowing. Small white head. Smell is not your typical IPA. It’s spicy and earthy. Small amounts of citrus and lemon peak through but the earthiness came through mostly for me. In the taste the fruits come through more. Citrus and lemon zest. The earthiness and spiciness still come through big here though and are the main components. There is a nice bready malt character holding everything together. The finish on this beer is very bitter and it just sticks around. Small amounts of alcohol peak through. The mouthfeel is light, crisp, and dry from start to finish. I really enjoyed the mouthfeel on this one.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled June 2010. Pours extremely hazy golden straw color with a nice 2-3 finger fairly dense off white head with great retention that reduces to a nice cap. Some decent lacing on the glass. Aromas of lemon zest, orange, herbal spices, floral, some pine resin, and light spicy alcohol. Fairly nice aromas here with good strength. Taste of big lemon, orange, grapefruit, herbal spiciness, pine resin, biscuit, honey-like sweetness; and other light fruits. Good amount of bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, herbal spice, pine, and bread on the finish for a while. Good balance of flavors and bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a slightly creamy and smooth mouthfeel. Nicely drinkable, but is still a bit of a sipper. Alcohol is well hidden at 8.9%; with only a slight warming on the finish. Overall, for being and DIPA, this has held up quite nicely since 2010. Nice hop flavor profile is still present; with nice flavor balance.

Originally rated 08/18/11. Pours very hazy Yellow/gold, with huge fluffy head. Looks like a Hefewiezen actually... Smell is tons of tropical fruits, little citrus, mango and pineapple, less sweet kind of almost fermented caramel note. Taste maintains that tropical fruit nectar, peach, some orange mixes with the caramel. The bitterness is quite subtle, as is the light alcohol flavour that really rounds everything out. Bitternesssneaks up on you, a few minutes after each sip, but for a beer thats 1 year old, still has tons of aromatic hops. Very balanced.

It was a Stone IPA that got the most basic part of Stone IPAs so drastically wrong: the hop flavors just didn’t work as well as I wouldve hoped. Not bad, but good evidence that english IPAs should remain little.

Bottle drank on 12/31/11. Pours a burnt yellow. Tastes smells of caramel, bread, hay, grass, floral, citrus.hazy, minimal head, white foam, light sweetness, medium bitterness, lightly sour, medium body, oily feel, lively, bitter. Over all a very nice tasting beer, the hops still fresh with a grassy taste bit lemon more then grapefruit. Fresh.
