We’ve been loving creating Collaboration beers with great creative brewers from all over the world these last several years-unique beers that would never have existed without the free-flowing imagination and idea generation of the collaborative process. However, when it comes to the Stone Anniversary Ales, it’s all us. Yet, it is indeed still a collaboration with great creative brewers (if we do say so ourselves). We’re talking about our own brewing team, of course. And while some of our beers, anniversary and otherwise, have been designed by a single person, the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA was definitely a team effort.

This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it’s a Double IPA (can you really say you’re surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let’s-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we’ve brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn’t quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Bomber at the end of a long party...nice amber, tropical, bubble gum, booze, hops, mod body and carbonation, bitter and fruity on the finish.

Appearance: Copper and garnet under a bread crust hued head that fades bubbly into a full layer with sticky lace clinging to the sides of the glass.
Nose: Pine oil and mint – very oily and sticky. Spearmint. A little swampy in the back. Orangey hop oils.
Palate: Mint and spearmint front and center. Sticky oily pine sap and orange oils. Green and herbaceous in the middle. Cucumber. The finish is all pine – like standing amidst a pine forest while licking the pine needles.
Final Thoughts: Another solid IPA from Stone that diverges some from their usual pine and grapefruit hop bombs, which is a good thing. Overall though, for an anniversary beer I was expecting something a little more off the chain or unusual.

Bottle @ Scooper Tasting in Ulfborg. Pours hazy orange amber with small off-white head. Clear aroma of fruit, citrus and flowers, with notes of hops. Sweetish, malty and fruity flavour, interacting wisely with bitter, hoppy notes, ending on a bittersweet and sourish note. Allright but I am used to better things from Stone.

Ulfborg weekend celebration of nothing in particular. Hazy orange with a lasting off-white head. Sweet caramel aroma with citrus and peach hops. Sweet malty flavour with citrus and peach hops, a touch of mint and a very bitter finish. Quite a bit of alcohol showing

Bottle @ Invasion U.S.A, Ulfborg 2013. Pours hazy orange with a creamy white head. Lots of caramel and bread - that Stone thing. Citrus hops beneath. Way too malty to be really good.
