Weíve been loving creating Collaboration beers with great creative brewers from all over the world these last several years-unique beers that would never have existed without the free-flowing imagination and idea generation of the collaborative process. However, when it comes to the Stone Anniversary Ales, itís all us. Yet, it is indeed still a collaboration with great creative brewers (if we do say so ourselves). Weíre talking about our own brewing team, of course. And while some of our beers, anniversary and otherwise, have been designed by a single person, the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA was definitely a team effort.

This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, itís a Double IPA (can you really say youíre surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the letís-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, weíve brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isnít quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Definitely not doing this beer a justice rating it this late but a tickers gonna tick. I got this via a local for local trade and it is a bit past it's prime. I'm sure I would have loved it fresh but alas, I never will know. I can pick up the rye spiciness and some of the lemon but the hops have faded.

Pours a dark orange with an off white head and sweet, hoppy, pine aroma. Taste is heavy bitter throughout, lots of hops, pine, resin, rye, caramel and fruit notes with a strong bitter finish. Complex, nice DIPA

Poured from a bomber dated August 2012, so probably past itís prime. Cloudy orange/copper with foam off white head. Aroma is caramel malt mixed with spice, pine and booze. Lots of resin and pine on the taste as well as some bready malt. Not too sweet, mostly bitter. Chewy mouthfeel. Overall, a decent DIPA, but Iím pretty sure I missed out by not having this when fresh - I didnít pick up much of the lemon or other citrus in my bottle.

UPDATED: FEB 25, 2014 Bottle: Drink fresh! Dark amber with moderate clarity and a long-lasting head that leaves epic lacing. Pine, resin, and hop oils mix with some lemon zest, orange peel, grapefruit, and some malty, sugar-sweetness. Taste includes a bit of spice from the rye and a bit of lemon zest that reminds me of Lemon Pledge. Zesty citrus and orange peel as well, along with more pines and resinous hops. Very faint malt, but it adds a touch of bready and light caramel sweetness at times. Interesting... pretty tasty and lemon-y.

16th Anniversary IPA is delicious. It pours a honey amber color with a tall light yellow head. It is very aromatic (lemon, herbal). The flavor harmonizes with the aroma in that it is very lemony with notes of herbal spice. Excellent beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
