COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We’ve been loving creating Collaboration beers with great creative brewers from all over the world these last several years-unique beers that would never have existed without the free-flowing imagination and idea generation of the collaborative process. However, when it comes to the Stone Anniversary Ales, it’s all us. Yet, it is indeed still a collaboration with great creative brewers (if we do say so ourselves). We’re talking about our own brewing team, of course. And while some of our beers, anniversary and otherwise, have been designed by a single person, the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA was definitely a team effort.

This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it’s a Double IPA (can you really say you’re surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let’s-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we’ve brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn’t quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

22 oz bottle from Total Wine in Tucson, served in a stem glass. Pours clear amber with a moderate off-white head that remains and leaves lots of fine lace. The nose has big hoppy notes of citrus and resin, along with lemon, caramel and spicy rye. There is also a hint of tropical fruit in the background. The flavour is intensely bitter throughout, with resinous and citric hops. This is paired with caramel and biscuity malts. There is also a big spicy rye character and a lemony accent. The finish is long, dry and peppery with a bit of grain. On the palate, it is medium in body with a dry, acidic texture and average carbonation. Overall, this is a nice double IPA with lemon and rye accents. It is very well constructed, but the lemon gets a little tiresome after a while. 2012-12-30

I love lemon and IPAs. This unfortunately was just OK. Good upfront with a weird and yeasty aftertaste. Maybe I’m just not that into the hop varieties in this one.

Bottle. Bronze with a small head. Unusual combination of citrus and hops. Medium body and easy to drink. Excellent.

Scents of lemon and vanilla, pours a cloudy light amber into a tulip glass. Malty lemon undertones too sharp when cold, but so much smoother as it warms in the glass. Resin, lemon and hops that balance the light bready malts, so much more pleasant as it warms, a unique brew that pairs well with light chicken or shrimp dishes. Not a personal favorite, but so glad I gave it a try, nice variation against so many ordinary brews.

Tap: Without even reading the description before drinking, I kept noticing some hints of spices throughout! So, I’m cool. Semi-cloudy with a small head and large chunks of spotty lacing. Blue spruce aroma with mild licorice and the usual hoppy elements. Flavors of spices mixed with citrusy hops. Unique and tasty!

1Pt 6 fl oz. bottle. Pours a slightly hazy light amber with an beige head with some colourful orange highlights. This beer smells awesome. Seriously, one of the best smelling IPA’s I’ve had. LOTS of tropical fruit, lemon pie filling, caramel candies, with a grassy herbal note. As for taste, it’s on the hoppier side of things, but it’s well balanced. Sweet, with a soapy, resinous hop note, faint oregano, pepper corns, caramel, and lots of citrusy bitterness in the super long finish. Giant thumbs up.
