COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Weíve been loving creating Collaboration beers with great creative brewers from all over the world these last several years-unique beers that would never have existed without the free-flowing imagination and idea generation of the collaborative process. However, when it comes to the Stone Anniversary Ales, itís all us. Yet, it is indeed still a collaboration with great creative brewers (if we do say so ourselves). Weíre talking about our own brewing team, of course. And while some of our beers, anniversary and otherwise, have been designed by a single person, the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA was definitely a team effort.

This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, itís a Double IPA (can you really say youíre surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the letís-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, weíve brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isnít quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

UPDATED: NOV 23, 2013 Cask at the Stone 17th anniversary festival. Columbus edition. Almost clear, dark golden in color, topped by a small, white head. The aroma is quite sweetish, pine cones and peaches and some resins. Bitter flavor with pine cones and some peaches. Full body, warming and smooth on the palate. Long finish. Pretty decent this one. 130817

Bottle. Had the regular bottled edition a little more than one year after the release. Itís still a fine beer, but itís quite obvious itís been cellared for some time. Anyway, itís a quite pleasant beer, and as the bottle sample was this old, I donít change my rating. Wouldíve added it at 6-4-6-4-13-3.3 if I was to. 131123

22 ounce bottle. Hazy orange color topped by a thick rocky beige head. Perfumy lemon malt aroma. Rich toasted malt flavor has obvious lemony notes. Lotís of complex hops come through. Tastes a lot like a lemon cough drop. Lotís of citrus hops throughout. Finishes bitter and dry.

Bottle from Pacific Liquor: Poured a pitch black liquid accompanied with a tan colored layer of fluffy foam head. In the aroma, the nose is dominated by citrus scented hops that give off an herbal fragrance. Palate is oily and yet leaves behind a sticky resin and sour taste. The flavor is intensely bitter with a strong punch of green hops that taste of citrus fruits such as grapefruit, orange peel, tangerine and lemon. Also, there is a rich flavor of black malts that carry this black IPA through and thus establishing it as a prime example of how a real black IPA should taste.

Tap into frozen mug at Oasis..grrr. Big and rich, I wouldíve guessed 8.5%, pretty nice for 10%. The rye is actually well incorporated, still pretty noticeable, adds some extra sweet, chewy, sugary gingerbread undertones..which almost have a buttery touch. Good, but not so exciting for Stone. Enjoyable enough, well crafted.

Definitely not doing this beer a justice rating it this late but a tickers gonna tick. I got this via a local for local trade and it is a bit past it's prime. I'm sure I would have loved it fresh but alas, I never will know. I can pick up the rye spiciness and some of the lemon but the hops have faded.

Pours a deep hazy rusty orange color with a nice head. Nose is citrus, with strong pine and resin. Taste is bitter, spicy with a strong malty caramel presence. nice lacing. Finish is bitter, moderate duration and ends on strong notes of pine, and resin. Quaff Score 6 / 10

Pours a dark orange with an off white head and sweet, hoppy, pine aroma. Taste is heavy bitter throughout, lots of hops, pine, resin, rye, caramel and fruit notes with a strong bitter finish. Complex, nice DIPA

Poured from a bomber dated August 2012, so probably past itís prime. Cloudy orange/copper with foam off white head. Aroma is caramel malt mixed with spice, pine and booze. Lots of resin and pine on the taste as well as some bready malt. Not too sweet, mostly bitter. Chewy mouthfeel. Overall, a decent DIPA, but Iím pretty sure I missed out by not having this when fresh - I didnít pick up much of the lemon or other citrus in my bottle.
