We’ve been loving creating Collaboration beers with great creative brewers from all over the world these last several years-unique beers that would never have existed without the free-flowing imagination and idea generation of the collaborative process. However, when it comes to the Stone Anniversary Ales, it’s all us. Yet, it is indeed still a collaboration with great creative brewers (if we do say so ourselves). We’re talking about our own brewing team, of course. And while some of our beers, anniversary and otherwise, have been designed by a single person, the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA was definitely a team effort.

This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it’s a Double IPA (can you really say you’re surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let’s-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we’ve brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn’t quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Bottle. Pretty perfect pour, clear dark copper with creamy white foam. Aroma is really potent, lots of lemon peel, really citrusy hops, spicy, a bit of black pepper. Taste is pretty aggressive and bitter, still conserves a nice spiciness though, and the maltiness is balanced. Palate is heavy, so is carbonation, just generally a big beer.

Draft. Poured hazy dark copper color with an average frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Heavy earthy hop and toasted rye aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy smooth bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer.

Deep orange with a minimal white head that fades fast. Nose of buttery waffles, sweet malt, rotten tropical fruits. Flavor is similar. This is supposed to be an IPA? Fuck. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap at Whole Foods Mayo. Pours a clear gold color with a white head. Lots of fresh citrusy notes, lemon, grapefuit and some resin. Flavor is citrusy, a hint of yeast, some resin, lemon notes and the body is so creamy. Really a great tasting beer.

Both bottle and draught. This rating is from the bottle. Pours with a crystal clear, slightly burnt gold to lightly orange hued body with a large, foamy, just off-white head. Great lace. Aromas are of citrus, pinesol, air freshener, pine, pomelo, tangerine. Mostly all hops. Grassy, light mint, medium alcohol, lots of lemon. Lightly waxy. Very low malt, medium-low ester. Kaffir Lime. Flavors are of lemon balm, verbena, waxy. Lightly toasted malt, lots of citrus, bay rum, and floral hop notes. Light tropical fruit and some melon like notes. Overall bitterness is medium-to medium high, properly balanced for an IPA, with a medium bitter duration. Some grassy and hay like notes. Warming in the finish with very little alcohol flavor. Zesty finish. Lightly oily. Dry, medium bodied, clean finish. Nice.

Bottle at Brew’s Cafe. Clear gold to amber pour with a medium off-white head. Citrusy nose of orange peel and lemon balm with some maltiness and piney hops. Malty flavor with lemon and orange character before a piney and earthy hop finish with a bit of herb. Different, but it works.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2012 2012-08-16. Crisp golden body with a nice white head. 3+ Flavour is an interesting melange of tastes, an interesting fruit character that is sort of citrusy and a bit melony? Fair bit of bitterness with interesting spice notes. Dry alcohol in the finish is noticeable but not as much as it could be for the abv. 7+ Fruity hoppy aroma with a lightly spicy accent to it is pleasant but a bit strange. Average plus to medium palate. 3+ Melon like fruit grows as it warms. I like it but find it a bit perplexing. 7/4/7/3/16 3.7 On tap at Blue Monk, Buffalo

2012-12-17. Lightly hazy dark orange body with a small off-white head. 3+ Aroma is hoppy, fruity, alcohol. 7+ Flavour is an interesting fruit melange, citrus, tropical fruit, light not quite herbal quality to it, sweet lemon notes in the finish. 7+ Smooth averad plus bodied palate. 3+ It is nice but just a little bit odd overall. 7/4/7/3/15 Bottle shared by HogTownHarry

Pours amberish yellow with white head and no lacing I really like the aroma. Strong citrus hops and some rye with spices. Taste is hoppy with strong citrus flavor, some spices and a touch of carmel for good balance. The beer disguises the high alcohol content. Very nice.

22 oz bottle - pours golden orange with crimson highlights. Huge creamy white head with excellent retention. Big notes of bitter lemongrass, lime, sweet tarts and spice. Taste is fruit forward, bittering finish, citrus notes and a creamy, medium bodied palate. Very little apparent alcohol. Nice and easy, great cold after a long day. Goes well with KISS’ Destroyer.

Pours a golden copper-yellow, with mid-sized head. Aroma is very strong--almost like a lemon air freshener. Flavor is dominated by the lemon verbena (they say "subtle lemon," but it’s hardly that), but there is a nice combination of hop bitterness and rye underneath it all. It’s another typical, outstanding double IPA concoction from Stone. Definitely worth a try.
