COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We’ve been loving creating Collaboration beers with great creative brewers from all over the world these last several years-unique beers that would never have existed without the free-flowing imagination and idea generation of the collaborative process. However, when it comes to the Stone Anniversary Ales, it’s all us. Yet, it is indeed still a collaboration with great creative brewers (if we do say so ourselves). We’re talking about our own brewing team, of course. And while some of our beers, anniversary and otherwise, have been designed by a single person, the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA was definitely a team effort.

This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it’s a Double IPA (can you really say you’re surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let’s-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we’ve brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn’t quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

UPDATED: AUG 21, 2012 Bouteille 22 oz. I usually wright my ratings in French but because this is soooo good, for my non-French friends, this beer is amazing. You love IPAs.....extreme IPAs...citrus, malt. Seriously this is a great beer. Fresh ? better. Thanks Stone.

Aromatics when in a solid sniffer impart many different scents than a standard imperial glass (silly me for starting in the imperial!). Loads of lemon peel and alcohol both of these elements almost overpower’s the hop base. Appearance is amber/goldenrod in color and a white head that pours about a finger and lingers in a wispy layer. Taste is first hit with hop bitterness, middle is bitterness and then you get a solid grapefruit sweetness on the back finishing end. Palate is medium-thick and very pleasant. Overall, this is a very tasty, palatable beer with a super nice aroma!

Smells like Pinesol and lemons. Taste is pretty much the same with the lemon flavor coming out more as the beer warms...not liking this at all.

Bottle. Amber with a medium, blond colored head. Strong citrus and tropical fruit notes with pine resins and floral hops atop caramel and sweet malt in the aroma. Taste is strong lemony notes, lemon candy, floral and piney hops, citrus oils, sweet malt, caramel notes and light tropical fruit. Body is medium and chewy with a mild resinous feel and dense creamy carbonation. Ends with more lemon, citrus oils, pine notes, floral hops, light spicy hops tropical fruit notes and big caramel.

UPDATED: MAY 9, 2013 Very complex, pours a nice rich amber, 1 finger head, off white lacing that sticks around forever. Aroma is piney, yellow grapefruit, resiny, lemon grass and a hint of medicinal. Taste follows the nose, alcohol is not present, more yellow grapefruit, tangerine, medicinal, peppery, spicy rye. Mouth feel is medium, leaning towards full, spicy notes stay around pleasantly. Very nicely crafted beer, more than an ipa!

On tap. Clear orange color. Nice, thick persisting slightly off-white head. Good dots, sheets, and legs of lace. Really interesting way to do a double IPA. Satisfying lemon verbena flavor that is allowed to shine, with the rye taking a back seat. Some spice, and tropical fruit aromas. Much more satisfyingly creative than doing just a normal rye IPA. Lemon verbena I grew to love from Jackie-Os brews, and have been missing ever since I left Athens when I graduated school. This hits the spot, I hope I see lemon verbena in hoppy beers more often. Nice, very light crisp carbonation, smooth texture. Very, very easy to drink. Finishes more on the dry side. Nice not-too-bitter taste, a little zesty sweetness. Great balance with the taste, doesn’t hurt the aroma at all. I like it a lot, would definitely get this again, often, even.

Looks like a Stone IPA, sunset orange 1 1/2 finger white foam head. Smells like a lemon jolly rancher, no malty smell. Taste is lemon zest, mango, sweet rye cracker, alcohol warmth and a dry bitter finish. Very nice carbonation. This is Stone IPA on steroids with lemon jolly ranchers added. While I’m not a huge fan of Double IPA’s this one is worthy of a try.

Brave enough to taste after smellIng. Smells like pine-sol. Awful aroma and flavor matches. Hope it was a bad keg. This was an immediate drain pour.
