Weíve been loving creating Collaboration beers with great creative brewers from all over the world these last several years-unique beers that would never have existed without the free-flowing imagination and idea generation of the collaborative process. However, when it comes to the Stone Anniversary Ales, itís all us. Yet, it is indeed still a collaboration with great creative brewers (if we do say so ourselves). Weíre talking about our own brewing team, of course. And while some of our beers, anniversary and otherwise, have been designed by a single person, the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA was definitely a team effort.

This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, itís a Double IPA (can you really say youíre surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the letís-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, weíve brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isnít quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Bottle. Amber with a medium, blond colored head. Strong citrus and tropical fruit notes with pine resins and floral hops atop caramel and sweet malt in the aroma. Taste is strong lemony notes, lemon candy, floral and piney hops, citrus oils, sweet malt, caramel notes and light tropical fruit. Body is medium and chewy with a mild resinous feel and dense creamy carbonation. Ends with more lemon, citrus oils, pine notes, floral hops, light spicy hops tropical fruit notes and big caramel.

UPDATED: MAY 9, 2013 Very complex, pours a nice rich amber, 1 finger head, off white lacing that sticks around forever. Aroma is piney, yellow grapefruit, resiny, lemon grass and a hint of medicinal. Taste follows the nose, alcohol is not present, more yellow grapefruit, tangerine, medicinal, peppery, spicy rye. Mouth feel is medium, leaning towards full, spicy notes stay around pleasantly. Very nicely crafted beer, more than an ipa!

On tap. Clear orange color. Nice, thick persisting slightly off-white head. Good dots, sheets, and legs of lace. Really interesting way to do a double IPA. Satisfying lemon verbena flavor that is allowed to shine, with the rye taking a back seat. Some spice, and tropical fruit aromas. Much more satisfyingly creative than doing just a normal rye IPA. Lemon verbena I grew to love from Jackie-Os brews, and have been missing ever since I left Athens when I graduated school. This hits the spot, I hope I see lemon verbena in hoppy beers more often. Nice, very light crisp carbonation, smooth texture. Very, very easy to drink. Finishes more on the dry side. Nice not-too-bitter taste, a little zesty sweetness. Great balance with the taste, doesnít hurt the aroma at all. I like it a lot, would definitely get this again, often, even.

Looks like a Stone IPA, sunset orange 1 1/2 finger white foam head. Smells like a lemon jolly rancher, no malty smell. Taste is lemon zest, mango, sweet rye cracker, alcohol warmth and a dry bitter finish. Very nice carbonation. This is Stone IPA on steroids with lemon jolly ranchers added. While Iím not a huge fan of Double IPAís this one is worthy of a try.

Brave enough to taste after smellIng. Smells like pine-sol. Awful aroma and flavor matches. Hope it was a bad keg. This was an immediate drain pour.

UPDATED: AUG 24, 2012 Pour out of 22 oz bottle, dark clear red pour with big fluffy lacing slightly off white/eggshell head. Aroma has notes of big lemon, oily floor wax notes, hints of a minty/herbal character, nice pineapple, grape, pear, some dank notes hints of earth and slight orange peel, caramel notes. Taste is sweet caramel, toffee, nice lemon and oily notes, hints of a slight herbal and grass mixing into some dank notes, finishing fairly sweet, but balanced with a fairly bitter kick. Pretty nice and definitely unique.

Pours an orangish color with a thin white head. Nose is zest, fruit, spices. Very interesting. Taste is the same profile as the nose. Feel is acidic, with nice spice content. Overall, a very interesting good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPad

Shared by jayhawk73. Thanks Jeff. The beer is orange hued with a thin, white collar. The aroma brings notes of pineapple, melon, alcohol, hops, citrus. Smells both strong and inviting. The flavor is sweet and a bit syrupy, with candied tropical fruit notes. Lemon zest and spice. The aroma is far superior to the flavor. The feel is a bit sweet and oozy. A solid beer, though best in small quantities. A nice brew to bring to a tasting.

Light honey color, clear and brilliant, much lace, Full body and intense flavor, very long palate, silky texture, very bitter but it has plenty of malt to balance it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
