Weíve been loving creating Collaboration beers with great creative brewers from all over the world these last several years-unique beers that would never have existed without the free-flowing imagination and idea generation of the collaborative process. However, when it comes to the Stone Anniversary Ales, itís all us. Yet, it is indeed still a collaboration with great creative brewers (if we do say so ourselves). Weíre talking about our own brewing team, of course. And while some of our beers, anniversary and otherwise, have been designed by a single person, the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA was definitely a team effort.

This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, itís a Double IPA (can you really say youíre surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the letís-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, weíve brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isnít quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Pours a dark, but vibrant orange with a thick off white lacing. Tropical and citrus notes, with a noticeable amount of alcohol present. Somewhat spicy with hints of lemon that are blended in such a way that they accentuate the hop profiles. Bitter in flavor and medium in body

Bottle. Amber golden clear with big frothy head. Aroma of tangerine, biscuit, grassy, spicy rye, only think I'm picking up lemon because of description. Tastes of caramel, some fruity hops but not much, spicy rye kick, and just a bit of noticeable lemon on the end. Medium carbonation with slick mouthfeel. Overall I don't really like this that much. The flavors are just too mashed up and don't really balance well for me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Appearance: golden, hazy, less then a finger of head, some alcohol legs Aroma: Lemon, floral, citrus Taste: Lemon, citrus hops and fruits, sweet maltyness, slight bitterness Overall: Enjoyable if you like lemon flavors. As it warms the lemon juice flavors enhanced a little. Not as bitter as I thought it was going to be. Citurs fruits are nice and big. Has a nice sweet malty mouthfeel. Didnít get the 10% barely at all. Very enjoyable.

Super fresh citrus and fruity hops come out on the aroma. Perfect see through copper in color with a small foam. Flavors of herbs, lemon, spices and bittering hops. Medium bodied with a subtle alcohol finish. Overall, this is a well-done and complex brew. Lots of unique spice and herb flavors with some earthy hops and warm alcohol. Iíd give this an A rating.

Frothy head that recedes rather quickly. It has a hazy orange apperance. It looks good, thus far. Lots of citrus, on the nose. Lemon, orange, and grapefruit immediately jump out, and hit my olfactories. The lemon does cut through, surprisingly. The rye is noticeable right away, and leaves a lasting impression on the taste buds. The lemon then, subtly kicks in, and couples well with the long lingering bitterness. The rye is becoming more noticeable in the aroma, and adding an additional nuance, that I canít necessarily say is good. Stone has a tendency to bit a bit over-the-top with their IPAs, which is fine. The rye is a bit much for me, and it seems to be becoming more and more dominant, and not leaving much for the lemon to kick in. Plus, the rye and lemon just donít go well together. Much more tame than their Ruination 10th Anniversary cleaning fluid.

Picked this up at Whole Foods. Holds a nice head while Iím drinking this. Big aromas of pine and lemons. Makes me think of walking thru pine forest with lemon trees. Tons of grass and pine with lemon drops complemented by a well balanced honeyed malt flavor. The combo of flavors follow into the finish, with some spicyness and burn. A Chirstmas tree came to mind while drinking. ( is that strange ).

22oz bottle, dated 8/8/12 (this fresh?! on the east coast?! awesome!), from grape & gourmet. pours a clear, pale gold capped by a thin, smooth, bright white head that leaves sticky rings of lace on the glass. aroma is outstanding, actually quite unique for a Stone brew, with heavy floral/perfume esters, pine resin, and tropical notes of tangerine and pineapple backed by spicy rye, fresh lemon zest, and honeysuckle with a touch of toasted, glazed donuts as it warms. flavor is simply wonderful, exactly what i expected following the aroma, with juicy, sweet tropical notes of mango, tangerine, and pineapple backed by a hefty dose of bitter hops, pine esters, and fresh lemon peel with subtle notes of rye toast, honey, and fresh herbs on the back end. as it opened up, this actually reminded of an obnoxiously dry-hopped version of Saison du Buff which is certainly a good thing in my book. palate is medium bodied with smooth carbonation and the lemon zest adds a nice tart, citrusy balance to the huge, bitter, and tropical hop notes. overall, another over-the-top and wonderfully unique anniversary beer from stone. cheers to 16 years!

Bottle. Clear, golden bronze pour with a large white head. Aroma is lemon, rye, sweet malt, pine, floral hops, and more lemon on the finish. Taste is lemon, rye, a fairly heavy and sweet malt presence, aggressive hop bitterness, and a somewhat clean finish although the alcohol does show. Heavy and on the sweet side IIPA but it drinks well. Coating, sticky mouthfeel. Nice beer.

Slightly muted hop aromas. Tangerine, Orange peel, biscuit, rye and white fruit flavors. Overall seems like an amped version of Ruination 10th.

Citrusy, perfume lemon hop aroma. Flavor is citrusy sweet spicy rye with lemon hints, grapefruit, mango. Signature stone hop overload. Very easy to drink. Alcohol is not detectable! Worked well in the current California end of summer heat. I would love it if this beer became bottled on the regular. I love it. Definitely one to drink fresh!!
