COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We’ve been loving creating Collaboration beers with great creative brewers from all over the world these last several years-unique beers that would never have existed without the free-flowing imagination and idea generation of the collaborative process. However, when it comes to the Stone Anniversary Ales, it’s all us. Yet, it is indeed still a collaboration with great creative brewers (if we do say so ourselves). We’re talking about our own brewing team, of course. And while some of our beers, anniversary and otherwise, have been designed by a single person, the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA was definitely a team effort.

This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it’s a Double IPA (can you really say you’re surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let’s-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we’ve brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn’t quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Poured from a bomber dated August 2012, so probably past it’s prime. Cloudy orange/copper with foam off white head. Aroma is caramel malt mixed with spice, pine and booze. Lots of resin and pine on the taste as well as some bready malt. Not too sweet, mostly bitter. Chewy mouthfeel. Overall, a decent DIPA, but I’m pretty sure I missed out by not having this when fresh - I didn’t pick up much of the lemon or other citrus in my bottle.

"Another beer, another hit. The lemon comes out nicely, but subtly, in both flavor and aroma. The citrus hops compliment that, and of course, a little sweetness and a good dose of bitterness. Looking forward to a couple more of these. 9/12 - definitively more perfumey lemon in both the aroma and flavor out of the bottle, for better or worse. I think the trade off cancels itself out, but definitely a different beer on tap.

Transfer from BA review on 11-27-12- Served on tap in a 10 oz snifter glass Appearance – Served an orange colored brew with a two finger off white head. The head was rather thin with it maintaining its composure for only a short time before fading to give a light level of lacing. Smell – The aroma is heaviest of some sweeter fruit smells of tropical fruits as well as a strong presence of some grapefruit and sweeter tangerine hop. Along with the citrus hop is a nice presence of a light pine and light floral hop aroma. Taste – The taste begins with a bready flavor with some caramel and light fruit sweetness. There is a lighter citrus grapefruit hop flavor up front. While it is light initially the citrus get quite strong as the taste advances, bittering it quite a bit. More toward the end a pine taste enters the taste. This is accompanied by some caramel flavors which also come to the tongue more toward the end. These flavors all mingle quite well to give a pleasant hopped taste on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the slightly above average side with a carbonation level that was a bit below average. Both were quite nice for the hop flavors and bready flavors of the beer as they allowed all the hop tastes to soak into the tongue. Overall – A rather tasty brew. Decently balanced for a stronger IPA. Well worth a try.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 22 oz bottle into a tulip glass. The label lists the abv at 10 % and there is a nice discretion of the beer. Appearance: The beer has a deep honey amber color with a slight haze. It builds a tall just off white head on top which hangs on well and clings to the glass making lots of cool lacing. Smell: The aroma is full of loads of bright lemony citrus and well...hops. (Classic Stone IPA) Taste / Palate: The flavor is full of hops from start to finish. First up are the citrus and tropical notes with a spicy malty bready base. This fades into herbal and pine like hop notes with slow fading bitterness in the finish. Notes: Hang on to the hops roller coaster its going to be a bitter good ride.

A dense blond top, atop a clear deep orange golden body. Intense caramel malt aroma, balanced by a rich citrussy and resiny hop nose. Not very full, considering the high abv. Smooth and warm in the mouth. Taste is like the achetypical big US IPA, Bold fruity and resiny hop bitterness, intense and rich caramel-accented malt base. Oh yes, this is a good one. Golden color, attractive. The hops hold up reasonably well, actually, though I can imagine that they’re still muted as against a fresh bottle. Lemon comes through and once again I’m not a huge fan of the influence of rye. Bottle.

From beer fridge....been there too long so most of hops are gone....interesting to get the taste without all the hoppiness,,,,the rye, lemon, and malts leave behind an interesting, tasty brew....don’t recommend it as a usual course but still interesting
