COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our latest anniversary beer, starring an all-German cast of malt and hops, is yet one more glorious example of a Stone IPA brewed outside the box. Our brewers have brought their experiments with German hops to fruition, leaving convention behind to create this hefty IPA entirely with pilsner malts. These provide a superbly crisp mouthfeel, while a unique mix of noble and new-school hop varieties adds layers of bright, bitter flavors. Despite the daunting name, this beer isn’t designed to bring about the end of the world, but it just might destroy some of your preconceived notions of what an IPA can be.

Hops bill: Bitter-hopped with Magnum Late kettle additions: Herkules, Merkur and Opal Whirlpool: Emerald (aka Smaragd) and Strisselspalt from the Alsace region of France, which is just a stone’s throw across the Rhine from the German border. Dry-hopped with a 50/50 blend of German Hersbrucker and Sterling

Malt bill: Weyerman Pilsner Malt, Briess GoldPils Vienna

Draft. Pours golden yellow with small white head. Smell is very floral, earthy hops, orange peel. Taste follows with almost a old grapefruit notes, grassy, lemon notes. Tasty!

January 31, 2014 - with blankboy, gregclow, jercraigs & mabel. 22oz bottle c/o blankboy. Hazy gold, average off-white head. Floral and heathery bitter aroma, some alcohol - odd fruity light aroma - what’s the hop? German? Okay. Taste follows - grassy, fruity, pretty dry, emerging grapefruity pith. Average body, a bit astringent, decent carbonation, and a medium-long dry pithy bitter finish and linger. Different - really good.

Reviewed from notes. Consumed 10/07/13. The appearance has a hazy golden orange colored body, one finger white foamy head, leaves some fairly thick lacing. The smell has a large amount of grapefruit, a fair amount of grassy resinous hops. The taste maintains a citrusy sweetness throughout the beer, grapefruit aftertaste, sticky sweet finish. The palate is about a light to medium, fairly sessionable, carbonation is good for the style and for me, actually this is very smooth but I’m thinkin’ that’s due to the fact I’m having this closer to expiration (10/31/13) Overall, this is a pretty good DIPA that I would have again.

Pours a hazy orange/yellow with soapy, filmy head. Hop profile is interesting, spicy and very dry and bitter. Not your usual stone IPA, but I’m impressed. Not just a west coast hop brewer.

From a bottle poured a straw color with a fair amount of head. Light malty hoppy flavor with a quick finish.

Germany isn’t known for their really tasty hop varieties, mostly made for bittering agent, and this shows that. Not what hopheads that expect a typical West Coast big DIPA are looking for.

From notes: Poured hazy golden amber with a 2-finger white head. Aroma of mildly citrusy hops, with some pine and a light caramel note. Full body with a moderate oily thickness. Citrusy up front, giving way to resiny hops and a note of stone fruit behind it. A touch of caramel underneath.

1/17/2014. 22 oz. bottle. Light cloudy amber color with a short white head. Spicy hop aromas with caramel. Dry, bitter, spicy hoppy flavors with a bitter and refreshing finish. Excellent!

My Bottom Line:
Alcohol winks through powerful herbal hops and coniferous resins in this rich and bitter brew.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam covers the cloudy blond.
-Citrusy whispers add complexity.
-Mouthfeel could be drier, crisper.
-Malts aren’t very well defined.
-This remains nicely different for a strong hoppy brew.

Bottle.

Not bad 22 oz bottle. Nice aroma. Very earthy. Slight dirt but not too too bad, different character for sure. Enjoyable. I may enjoy it more as I drink more.
