Our latest anniversary beer, starring an all-German cast of malt and hops, is yet one more glorious example of a Stone IPA brewed outside the box. Our brewers have brought their experiments with German hops to fruition, leaving convention behind to create this hefty IPA entirely with pilsner malts. These provide a superbly crisp mouthfeel, while a unique mix of noble and new-school hop varieties adds layers of bright, bitter flavors. Despite the daunting name, this beer isn’t designed to bring about the end of the world, but it just might destroy some of your preconceived notions of what an IPA can be.

Hops bill: Bitter-hopped with Magnum Late kettle additions: Herkules, Merkur and Opal Whirlpool: Emerald (aka Smaragd) and Strisselspalt from the Alsace region of France, which is just a stone’s throw across the Rhine from the German border. Dry-hopped with a 50/50 blend of German Hersbrucker and Sterling

Malt bill: Weyerman Pilsner Malt, Briess GoldPils Vienna

This beer was recommended to me; enjoy it but I'm not sure I would get it if I also had a chance to have ruination ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Growler fill from brewery. Pours a mostly clear golden amber hue with two fingers of off-white foam showing good retention. AROMA of very spicy and fragrant hops, earthy-grainy malts, grass, pine/spruce, and some stone fruit. FLAVOR full of spicy and earthy hops with additional notes of pine resin, fresh-cut grass, citrus, and some balancing caramel malts (though the hops certainly win here). Moderately bitter but with a VERY dry finish. The high ABV is completely concealed here. Stone produces yet another great hoppy ale. This one is kind of an anomaly since the noble hops are so prevalent, but it’s great to see Stone explore this "other" / traditional kind of hops, and with the usual Stone abandon. (79, 808)

Bottle @ home picked up at Wilbur’s Fort Collins. Pours a bit hazy, dull golden orange appearance with a cream colored head. Grapefruit, tropical fruit, cream, sweet grain, bread in the nose all with a bit of spiciness. A little chewy, toasted bready, cracker, slightly tangy, herbal hoppy, slightly dank flavor with a slight veggie note. Probably my least favorite IPA released by Stone to date.

22 oz. bottle. Pours clear orange gold color with a thin soapy white head that fades to a soapy wispy film and collar. Aroma has soft floral herbal scents which are slightly minty and earthy flower. Taste has a crazy bitter hop flavor that turns right into a minty earthy flower and herbal characteristics, there is some spice/pepper which is probably from the mint. Palate is medium and drying with a warming finish. This is a complex beer with some not so common flavors.

Sampled this at Campground Brewdown 2. Pours a hazed gold with a thin white head. Big citrus hops, spicy menthol notes. Medium-bodied, spicy hops, cool citrus, malt and spicy earth. Big spicy citrus hops into a long herbal bitter finish.

walk into the forest... walk DEEP into the forest... look around.. listen.. find an old pinetree.. find a very old pinetree.. locate the bright green tips.. grab a large handful of those needles.. shove them in your mouth and chew.. slowly, firmly.. until the bittersweet resin coats your teeth.. your tongue.. and your soul.

Pours a bright light orange with a two finger white head which fades to nice lacing. Aroma is of citrus, pine, bready pilsner malts, sweet malts, and some tropical fruits. Taste is hoppy up front with some citrus, spicy pne, and tropical fruits, and then has some nice german malt notes on the backend with some bready pilsner malts and sweet malts. Has a medium-full body with a creamy mouthfeel and a semi dry, moderately bitter, medium-long finish. Overall, a tasty, outside the box DIPA that is very unique and makes nice use of all german ingredients.

Soft aromas of pine, resin, herbs and a touch of vanilla. See through copper with no foam whatsoever. Strong bitter hops upfront with flavors of grapefruit, earthy pines, resin, burnt sugar and a strong metallic funk. Finish leaves resin, herbs and hops on the palate. Overall, delicious, bitter and complex. Bit of an odd metallic overtone but not bad at all. Congratulations Stone, on 17 years of epic.
