COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our latest anniversary beer, starring an all-German cast of malt and hops, is yet one more glorious example of a Stone IPA brewed outside the box. Our brewers have brought their experiments with German hops to fruition, leaving convention behind to create this hefty IPA entirely with pilsner malts. These provide a superbly crisp mouthfeel, while a unique mix of noble and new-school hop varieties adds layers of bright, bitter flavors. Despite the daunting name, this beer isn’t designed to bring about the end of the world, but it just might destroy some of your preconceived notions of what an IPA can be.

Hops bill: Bitter-hopped with Magnum Late kettle additions: Herkules, Merkur and Opal Whirlpool: Emerald (aka Smaragd) and Strisselspalt from the Alsace region of France, which is just a stone’s throw across the Rhine from the German border. Dry-hopped with a 50/50 blend of German Hersbrucker and Sterling

Malt bill: Weyerman Pilsner Malt, Briess GoldPils Vienna

Bomber from BevMo. Deep golden in color. Somewhat hoppy nose. Grains and maltiness as well. Grassy hop character up front. Hoppiness is somewhat mellow, yet sill there. Interesting take.

Pours clear deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, citrus, grape, pine and peach. Taste is light to medium sweet and medium bitter with a warm, citrus fruity and piney finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

On tap at Stone 17th anniversary party. A clear one, golden in color and with a dense, off-white head. Pine cones, citrus peel and a faint touch of pale malts and alcohol. Full body, soft carbonation and some warmth. Quite bitter flavor, with a light malty background. Pine cones, citrus peel. Long, warm and bitter finish. Sure pleasant. 130816

I certainly expected more from this. The 16th was a welcome departure and this is just more of the same Stone. Hops and not much else. Cool name but give me Cali-Belgique over this and any other Stone IPA.

Pours a golden orange color with a small white head. Alma is floral hops, biscuit, grass, and honey. The taste is sweet cereal and honey followed by a monstrously bitter hop after taste. The hops are actually really tasty but like with a lot of stone brews they go over the top and destroy your palate, especially as the beer warms up. The after taste is forever, like an oily scotch. The bitterness lingers and lingers. Another good double ipa from stone with an interesting hop.

Poured two and half fingers of head on a clear, medium straw colored body. Lots of bubbles. The aroma is spicy with a good dose of lemon and grapefruit... and in the far background is some vanilla. The taste goes from bluntly bitter at first to moderate lemon bitter in the middle to a pine bitter slamdunk at the end. It’s fun and enjoyable though. The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation.

Interesting! Initial aroma (for a split second) gave some sense of the Stone ’character’ to an IPA, but after that what I experienced was something different than the norm. Clear golden orange color, moderate sized head, decent lace and retention. Grassy aroma, some bread, lemon, somewhat spicy, lightly buttery. Medium to full body, moderate to high bitterness, alcohol hidden well. Clean mouthfeel, quite drinkable. As others have stated, it’s somewhat reminiscent of an imperial pilsner. Cool take on the style.

16 aug 2013, bottle. Yellow, clear, no bubbles. Nose is straw grain and faint lemon hops. Thin body and moderately fizzy. Cotton candy, grassy hops, sugary. Nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
