Our latest anniversary beer, starring an all-German cast of malt and hops, is yet one more glorious example of a Stone IPA brewed outside the box. Our brewers have brought their experiments with German hops to fruition, leaving convention behind to create this hefty IPA entirely with pilsner malts. These provide a superbly crisp mouthfeel, while a unique mix of noble and new-school hop varieties adds layers of bright, bitter flavors. Despite the daunting name, this beer isn’t designed to bring about the end of the world, but it just might destroy some of your preconceived notions of what an IPA can be.

Hops bill: Bitter-hopped with Magnum Late kettle additions: Herkules, Merkur and Opal Whirlpool: Emerald (aka Smaragd) and Strisselspalt from the Alsace region of France, which is just a stone’s throw across the Rhine from the German border. Dry-hopped with a 50/50 blend of German Hersbrucker and Sterling

Malt bill: Weyerman Pilsner Malt, Briess GoldPils Vienna

On tap at Hops & Pies last August. Listed at 8.8%. Pours an amber with moderate head and lace. Aroma of straw hops and moderate malts. Significant carbonation and big mouthfeel. Flavors of bitter roots, tropical fruit rind, floral hops, chalk, dandelion, white grapefruit rind. Overall different and a bit challenging.

Pours cloudy gold with a moderate white pillow head. Aroma is citrus hops and light cereal malt. Taste is big citrus hop bitterness. So uncommon for german hops but I would expect nothing less from Stone.

Pours a cloudy yellow orange color with a grapefruit citrus aroma. Taste is of bitter malt that you would expect from an IPA. Its a clean bitter taste that lingers on the palate just to remind you of the German hops. Another good beer from Stone.

Drink straight from the bottle hobo style. Raw honey, catty german hops, and plenty of balanced malt. Major kick on the back end.

Bomber: Aroma has got a nice hop texture, light grapefruit notes with some nice grassy textures as well. Appearance is a golden color with the slightest tinge of amber a white head that diminishes into a soapy film. Taste has got a nice intermingling hop notes with not a really big malt influence. Palate has got medium mouth feel with a nice hop note that lingers on into the after taste. Overall, I like it. Not the best Imperial IPA that I’ve had but pretty good. Cheer!

Pours a hazy orange yellow with a light tan head and good lacing. Aroma of honey. Taste is honey sweet with a caramel note followed by a stiff bitterness that warmly balances the flavor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours one of the nicest golden oranges I’ve seen. Aroma is subtle with hints of hops and a nice malty tone. Taste is very hoppy up front with a toasted malt middle and a bitter finish that lingers. Palate is similar with a very nice mouth feel. Nicely balanced. A very hearty and "warm" IPA.

Pours golden / orange with a smallish white head. The aroma has sweet malt, grass, candy, floral hoppiness, mild pine and some alcohol warmth. The beer has a medium / full body that is grainy and husky and there is a decent amount of semi-soft carbonation. The flavor starts with big pils-like malt, some sweetness, grass and floral hops. The finish has more grassiness, sulfur and alcohol warmth. Very enjoyable.

Bottle sample at Stone tasting. Clear golden with a white head, nice lacing on the glass. Aroma - mostly hoppy with pine, grass and citrus in the nose. Sweet, grass, floral, herbal, light alcoholic notes, light maltiness, long lasting bitter finish, very well balanced flavors. Medium-bodied, sticky on palate, easy drinking for 9.5ABV beer. Great.

Bottle:   Orange hued straw, pale haze, thin to moderate frothy white head, fairly nice lacing.   Sweet tropical fruit up front, citrusy, a little burning alcohol on the nose.   Strong citrus hop presense on first sip, but also comes across as tropical without being too sweet.   Big malt body, fruity, citrusy, reminds me slightly of 15.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Assertive hop finish, citrusy, mildly sweet.   Very respectable.   Not as juicy as their 15, but still tasty!
