COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our latest anniversary beer, starring an all-German cast of malt and hops, is yet one more glorious example of a Stone IPA brewed outside the box. Our brewers have brought their experiments with German hops to fruition, leaving convention behind to create this hefty IPA entirely with pilsner malts. These provide a superbly crisp mouthfeel, while a unique mix of noble and new-school hop varieties adds layers of bright, bitter flavors. Despite the daunting name, this beer isn’t designed to bring about the end of the world, but it just might destroy some of your preconceived notions of what an IPA can be.

Hops bill: Bitter-hopped with Magnum Late kettle additions: Herkules, Merkur and Opal Whirlpool: Emerald (aka Smaragd) and Strisselspalt from the Alsace region of France, which is just a stone’s throw across the Rhine from the German border. Dry-hopped with a 50/50 blend of German Hersbrucker and Sterling

Malt bill: Weyerman Pilsner Malt, Briess GoldPils Vienna

Pours a hazy orange color. Very rich flavor with German hops that aren’t noticeable. Too much malt and not enough good hop flavors. Normally I am a fan of Stone brews but this one did not hit the mark.

Pours a hazy orange with sticky white head. Slight aroma that shows the aroma. As it warms, the German hops are surprisingly sticky and flavorful. Light to medium bodied.

Bottle. Light hazy gold pour with white head. Aroma is piney really resinous, spicy old-world hop aroma. Crisp malt flavor, definitely pils, however also quite bitter and a tad boozy, still quite enjoyable though. Palate is lightly carbed and oily. Good.

I said to Melba I smelled powdered sugar and she said i meant cornstarch & sugar. So aromas of powdered sugar, white crackers, honey & a bitter spice. Powdered sugar is a definite but minority element in the flavor, dancing beneath pine & alcohol , a hint of lemon & peach. Clear slightly orange yellow. My palate is confused, as is the finish. A Californized super Pilsner with a Belgian accent? I’m a big Stone fan, including the anniversary IPAs but this one doesn’t work for me

UPDATED: APR 20, 2014 22 Oz Bomber. The beer pours to a very cloudy orange color with a medium white head. The aroma is very strong with floral & citrus from the hops. The taste is very light with a very crisp strong bitter finish. The beer is your normal DIPA but is well worth a try. Overall a very good but different DIPA.

Bottle. Sampling session at Lefty’s. Mild pine, slight cabbage, and light fruit. Clear medium straw. Mild candyish caramel initial /hops emerge in a major way / finish is balanced and long. Medium body. Well-blended stuff, slight sweet finish. Nice variation, with the German hopping,. Distinctive and tasty.
