Our latest anniversary beer, starring an all-German cast of malt and hops, is yet one more glorious example of a Stone IPA brewed outside the box. Our brewers have brought their experiments with German hops to fruition, leaving convention behind to create this hefty IPA entirely with pilsner malts. These provide a superbly crisp mouthfeel, while a unique mix of noble and new-school hop varieties adds layers of bright, bitter flavors. Despite the daunting name, this beer isn’t designed to bring about the end of the world, but it just might destroy some of your preconceived notions of what an IPA can be.

Hops bill: Bitter-hopped with Magnum Late kettle additions: Herkules, Merkur and Opal Whirlpool: Emerald (aka Smaragd) and Strisselspalt from the Alsace region of France, which is just a stone’s throw across the Rhine from the German border. Dry-hopped with a 50/50 blend of German Hersbrucker and Sterling

Malt bill: Weyerman Pilsner Malt, Briess GoldPils Vienna

Bottle. Pours orange /golden color, clear, very thin, fine white head. Aroma hops, bread, light citrus. Taste is mostly hops, bread, sour, acidic with a nice bitter, wet hop finish. Mouthfeel us nice and full. Rare lacing. This ipa has a strong wet hopped character without the usual super bitter finish.

Slightly hazy golden color in the glass. Complex hop aroma with floral, slightly spicy, slightly fruity components. Rich and smooth mouthfeel. Pleasant sweetness. Excellent beer.

Got in Niagara Falls. Dark yellow, a bit of haze, not much head. Meh on the appearance. Nose is dominated by malt, and mild citrus. Taste is very well integrated. Subtle. Surprised by the German hops, these did not taste or smell like I recall. Nice.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep golden with a small white head. Has a fresh floral herbal hop nose with citrus and clean biscuity malts. Starts with good citrus fullness and sweet pale malts well-balanced with an assertive piny flavor hop profile and a healthy dose of bitterness. Finishes drier with lingering bitterness. A unique and well-made brew. Thanks for sharing JB.

Bottle shared by Pinkzambia. Slightly hazy golden light orange. Moderate citursy and resiny aromas and flavors. Didn’t taste as big as it claims. A tasty and manageable DIPA

Bottle: Gold color with a nice white head and sticky lacing. Basic hoppy earthy aroma with a solid backbone of hop flavors. A worthy beer of praise this is!

Brilliant yet slightly haze golden yellow body with a decent foamy white head. Slight vegetal scent along with a white pepper spicy note. That made me think I was about to get my tongue stung with some kind of crazy hop juice (not that Stone *ever* does that! :). Instead, there was a mildly sweet floral/citrus flavor like honeysuckle! This was followed by a more vegetal, thistle-y, bitter flavor that balanced out the sweetness without clobbering it. Good caramel malt base here, but the hops really shine here. I just looked at the deScription and it’s no wonder now why this is so different and complex! I have even heard of some of those hops! There’s a good alcohol bite too although it doesn’t seem like 9.5% and I’m guessing all the other things floating around in there take the tongues mind off it. Finishes sweet, semi-dry, floral and bitter. Once again, Stone knocks it out of the park in a crazy unique way. Happy Anniversary!

Pours hazy amber with an ample off-white head. Complex fruity hop aroma. Bright, floral, citrusy hop flavor with a very long bitter finish. Do I have enough knowledge and a sophisticated enough palate to tell that these are German hops? Nope. Do I enjoy drinking it? Certainly.

Pours a hazy orange color. Very rich flavor with German hops that aren’t noticeable. Too much malt and not enough good hop flavors. Normally I am a fan of Stone brews but this one did not hit the mark.

Pours a hazy orange with sticky white head. Slight aroma that shows the aroma. As it warms, the German hops are surprisingly sticky and flavorful. Light to medium bodied.
