COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our latest anniversary beer, starring an all-German cast of malt and hops, is yet one more glorious example of a Stone IPA brewed outside the box. Our brewers have brought their experiments with German hops to fruition, leaving convention behind to create this hefty IPA entirely with pilsner malts. These provide a superbly crisp mouthfeel, while a unique mix of noble and new-school hop varieties adds layers of bright, bitter flavors. Despite the daunting name, this beer isn’t designed to bring about the end of the world, but it just might destroy some of your preconceived notions of what an IPA can be.

Hops bill: Bitter-hopped with Magnum Late kettle additions: Herkules, Merkur and Opal Whirlpool: Emerald (aka Smaragd) and Strisselspalt from the Alsace region of France, which is just a stone’s throw across the Rhine from the German border. Dry-hopped with a 50/50 blend of German Hersbrucker and Sterling

Malt bill: Weyerman Pilsner Malt, Briess GoldPils Vienna

Nice nose and head retention. Well balance of abv and bittering hops to linger on the finish. I would purchase this beer again.

Raw beer. Strong aroma of citrus and floral and spiciness. Orange copper color that was not clear. White foamy head. Medium weight but coated the mouth and high carbonation. Strong harsh bitterness up front that continued but didn’t overwhelm. Good malt backbone with a slight sweetness. Big and bold.

22oz bottle - Sweet. Why’d it have to be sweet. OK, so the lines subject is "snakes" in the movie quote, but it just wouldn’t do for this review. This beer is sweet, but it’s also hoppy to. A good dose of pine needles on the sniff, a touch spicy, alcohol, but also lots of fruity cocktail syrupyness. I get a lot of tropical fruity character like mango and pineapple on the flavor, some underlying vegetal bitterness like carrots or bell peppers combined with pine sap and wet leaves. Finish is long and enjoyable.

Transfer from BA review on 9-22-13- Poured from bottle into a snifter Appearance – The beer pours a hazy orange amber color with a small white fizzy head. The head fades fast leaving a persistent bubbly foam on the surface of the brew and a little bit of streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is big of a grassy and grapefruit citrus hop as well as lots of sweeter fruit aromas. The sweeter fruit smells are a mix of orange and tropical fruits of tangerine, mango, and papaya. There is a lighter bready malt aroma there as well, but this is relatively light in comparison the fruit aromas, which overall dominate the smell and overall create a pleasant tropical fruit and lightly hopped aroma. Taste – Unlike what would have been expected from the nose the taste begins with a rather malty taste of a cracker and bready flavor. A small amount of tangerine sweetness is present upfront, but not nearly as heavy as would have been expected from the nose. Upfront along with the lighter sweetness and malty taste is a moderate showing of a grapefruit and light grass hop taste. As the flavor advances the grapefruit gets more and more intense and bitter while the sweetness fades. At the same time a bit of pine comes to the tongue, all while the hop flavors get more resinous and bitter toward the end. In the end with the bittering of the hop and the lightening of the sweet a somewhat drier and rather biting bitter flavor is left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the medium side in terms of thickness and creaminess for a brew of 9.5 % abv. with the carbonation level being on the rather average side. A slightly thicker body and lower carbonation may have been slightly more fitting, but overall it was alright. Overall – A decent double IPA, but nothing all that fantastic. A little to bitter for bitter sake with not too much balance. A nice one to try, but not one I will likely go back to over and over again.

"I was a little apprehensive about the all German schtick, but if anyone’s earned the right to tinker, it’s Stone. Comes across as a delicious and incredibly hoppy yet soft imperial IPA/imperial pilsner hybrid, bringing the best of both into play. Unique yet familiar. Bready, sweet, yet piney and grassy and spicy and weed all rolled into one. Thanks ill have another. I imagine better now, after say September, it’ll fade."
