Our latest anniversary beer, starring an all-German cast of malt and hops, is yet one more glorious example of a Stone IPA brewed outside the box. Our brewers have brought their experiments with German hops to fruition, leaving convention behind to create this hefty IPA entirely with pilsner malts. These provide a superbly crisp mouthfeel, while a unique mix of noble and new-school hop varieties adds layers of bright, bitter flavors. Despite the daunting name, this beer isn’t designed to bring about the end of the world, but it just might destroy some of your preconceived notions of what an IPA can be.

Hops bill: Bitter-hopped with Magnum Late kettle additions: Herkules, Merkur and Opal Whirlpool: Emerald (aka Smaragd) and Strisselspalt from the Alsace region of France, which is just a stone’s throw across the Rhine from the German border. Dry-hopped with a 50/50 blend of German Hersbrucker and Sterling

Malt bill: Weyerman Pilsner Malt, Briess GoldPils Vienna

Ah, Stone. Always upmost among innovation and extremes, they have made some of the greatest beers I have ever tasted, along with some of the absolute worst (tending more toward the former than the latter). I wondered what was in store for me with a bomber of Gotterdammerung. Upon first sniffs, I detected pine, orange fruits, and some strong sugary malt. Powerful stuff; good upon modest sniffs, but gaggy upon deeper whiffs. Head is nice, though dying down quicker than I might expect. Lacing a little better, albeit not outstanding. Flavor: IBUs assault! Alcohol assaults! Sweet malts assault! Burps assault! Second sip: sweet malts. BITTERNESS! Gaggy alcohol. *cough* Third sip: *GAG* Bitterness and alcohol! Tasty stuff beneath all that, though - lots of flowers, like dear Ruination. I need to eat and take a break; I cannot just drink this like a nice fruity IPA or a nice Saazy Pils. There; had some nice burger soup with a slight jalapeno kick. Ah. Took the edge off the high-powered flowers. Great pairing. Took another big bite just for balance. Another whiff: GEEZ LOUISE BITTER MALT SUGAR HOP ASSAULT. *deep breath* Okay. Another smell: orange juice gag. *deeper breaths* I will take another big sip now. *cough* *burp* Mmm, bitter orange juice. AGHHH ALCOHOL BURN *COUGH* Seems higher than 9.5%. Bitterness lingers nicely, though. Still, need more burger, green bean, tomato, celery, and jalapeno soup. Ahhh. Several gulps later, I am ready to face once again this German Gotterdamnwhatever from Stony. Smell: women’s perfume, orange juice, and ... another smell: BLECHperfumeOJ. *clears throat* Time to drink. *burp* Big sip and three more gulps - *COUGH*. Grapefruit now. Mmm. Booze *cough/throat-clear* Geez, I am really congested now, but - flowers and grapefruit are now lingering. mmm. Still, need more soup to offset this powerful stuff. Mmm, burger soup. I have two sips left, I think, from this serving size. OKAY HERE WE GO: Two big gulps OMAY GAGGING ON FLOWERS AND BOOZE! If this thing weren’t so freaking *burp* harsh...*burp x3*. Several more burps. Just too much here, ladies and gentlemen - I want my Ruination. Almost done with both soup and beer, but let’s try to get rid of this beer first - one last drink: *COUGH* yeah, too much. Just too much. Sorry, Stone - this is not one of your best. It’s not as catty and urine-like and bad over-the-top as some of your worst offerings, but it’s still too much for me. I think there is enough good going on to finish the bomber, but not without the assistance of balancing soup. Thank you for your *burp* time.

Bottle @ home picked up at Wilbur’s Fort Collins. Pours a bit hazy, dull golden orange appearance with a cream colored head. Grapefruit, tropical fruit, cream, sweet grain, bread in the nose all with a bit of spiciness. A little chewy, toasted bready, cracker, slightly tangy, herbal hoppy, slightly dank flavor with a slight veggie note. Probably my least favorite IPA released by Stone to date.

Draft: clear orange with a nice white head. Aromas of sweet flowery citrus. Flavor is bitter, citrus, but a super light body to it. Good... But I want more body. Still very tasty, though.

Smells of malt. Medium retention and some lacing. Not overly hoppy or malty. Smooth in the finish, but bitter in the aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Hazy golden-orange body, medium sized off-white head, minimal lacing. toffee, orange marmalade, honey, biscuit, citrus. Odd blend of flavors. Medium to full bodied, moderate carbonation, assertive bitterness.

Bottle. Dark hazy gold with a fluffy white head. Aroma and taste are bitter with tropical fruit notes. Pilsner malt does not make an appearance as far as I can tell. I like the concept but the execution is lacking.

Wtf! IPA? Hello Imperial Pilsner. Blah. I expected a lot more from Stone for a 17 year anniversary batch. Disappointed. Call this what it is, and I would rate it much higher! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draught at Black Birch. Pours a ripe golden color with a finger or two or tight sticky foam. The nose is spicy earthy and a touch of grass and bready malt. The palate is an onslaught of spicy bitterness, way to heavy handed on spicy hops for my drinking pleasure. I understand the concept and tried it for that but there is a reason DIPA’s work better with certain hops varieties and this is proof to that.

(Draught) deep gold, fine white bubbles. Nose of rich sweet citrus zest, candied peel, green tea, orange pulp. Taste is exceptionally bitter, pine, citrus zest oils, just too bitter for me, quite a bit of sweetness too.

Germany isn’t known for their really tasty hop varieties, mostly made for bittering agent, and this shows that. Not what hopheads that expect a typical West Coast big DIPA are looking for.
