COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our latest anniversary beer, starring an all-German cast of malt and hops, is yet one more glorious example of a Stone IPA brewed outside the box. Our brewers have brought their experiments with German hops to fruition, leaving convention behind to create this hefty IPA entirely with pilsner malts. These provide a superbly crisp mouthfeel, while a unique mix of noble and new-school hop varieties adds layers of bright, bitter flavors. Despite the daunting name, this beer isn’t designed to bring about the end of the world, but it just might destroy some of your preconceived notions of what an IPA can be.

Hops bill: Bitter-hopped with Magnum Late kettle additions: Herkules, Merkur and Opal Whirlpool: Emerald (aka Smaragd) and Strisselspalt from the Alsace region of France, which is just a stone’s throw across the Rhine from the German border. Dry-hopped with a 50/50 blend of German Hersbrucker and Sterling

Malt bill: Weyerman Pilsner Malt, Briess GoldPils Vienna

bottle. slightly hazy pale gold with a stable, fluffy, white head. a blend of citrus, pear, and tropical hop aromas. surprisingly not floral as would be expected from noble type hops. the flavor is soapy and intensely bitter, almost harsh. lemony, citrus rind with pith. the pilsner malt doesn’t seem to provide enough residual sweetness to balance a numbing hop addition. lightish body and dry. extreme palate crushing astringency from alcohol and hop bitterness. not really my thing i suppose.

22 oz bottle, bottled on 7/26/13. Pours clear golden orange with a medium creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet malts, ripe fruits and floral, grassy, slightly resiny hops with some alcohol.

The flavor is a little sweet fruity toasted malt (slightly soapy) with a big floral, grassy, slightly resiny bitterness in the finish. There are some notes of cream ale. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, an OK DIPA, I think going German was not a wise choice.

Cotton Candy and gin... really Mitch? Nice try but you just swung at a pitch in the dirt

22oz bottle. A: Clearish copper with a 1/2" white head. Nice legs. N: Earth and peppercorn. Some mandarin orange and pineapple. The former is the first to hit me, with the latter becoming more dominant as this warms. Leafy pine in there as well. T: Very bitter and almost salty? Marijuana and ashy cigarettes at the end. Tons of hops here, but they aren’t good ones. Some citrus notes mixed with ample sweetness. M: Really dry and scraping. Very sticky, but this has far too much of Stone’s patented booze. O: A passable DIPA that’s hyper-aggressive, but not actually very good. Wouldn’t have this one again.

Bomber from Julios. A medium golden brew. Thin white head. Strong fruity and spice aromas. Flavor is overly sweet and malty. Burnt rubber hops and spice. ABV hits hard. This one is all over the place for me and quite muddled.

Pours a hazy orange color. Very rich flavor with German hops that aren’t noticeable. Too much malt and not enough good hop flavors. Normally I am a fan of Stone brews but this one did not hit the mark.

I certainly expected more from this. The 16th was a welcome departure and this is just more of the same Stone. Hops and not much else. Cool name but give me Cali-Belgique over this and any other Stone IPA.

Draft. Yellow pour with white head. Pilsner malts with some hints of hop flavors. Not for me, won’t even give this a chance to grow on me.

Appearance - gold and a bit cloudy Aroma - light grass Mouthfeel - creamy with a kick. Taste - different. Less IPA than would expect. Bitter aftertaste. The German hops must be milder. Used to more light and crisp but this is heavy and earthy. Overall - decent but not really great. Has the double IPA signature but the hops are just different. Missing the crispness I want.

Pours a cloudy yellow orange color with a grapefruit citrus aroma. Taste is of bitter malt that you would expect from an IPA. Its a clean bitter taste that lingers on the palate just to remind you of the German hops. Another good beer from Stone.
