Our latest anniversary beer, starring an all-German cast of malt and hops, is yet one more glorious example of a Stone IPA brewed outside the box. Our brewers have brought their experiments with German hops to fruition, leaving convention behind to create this hefty IPA entirely with pilsner malts. These provide a superbly crisp mouthfeel, while a unique mix of noble and new-school hop varieties adds layers of bright, bitter flavors. Despite the daunting name, this beer isn’t designed to bring about the end of the world, but it just might destroy some of your preconceived notions of what an IPA can be.

Hops bill: Bitter-hopped with Magnum Late kettle additions: Herkules, Merkur and Opal Whirlpool: Emerald (aka Smaragd) and Strisselspalt from the Alsace region of France, which is just a stone’s throw across the Rhine from the German border. Dry-hopped with a 50/50 blend of German Hersbrucker and Sterling

Malt bill: Weyerman Pilsner Malt, Briess GoldPils Vienna

I certainly expected more from this. The 16th was a welcome departure and this is just more of the same Stone. Hops and not much else. Cool name but give me Cali-Belgique over this and any other Stone IPA.

Draft. Yellow pour with white head. Pilsner malts with some hints of hop flavors. Not for me, won’t even give this a chance to grow on me.

Appearance - gold and a bit cloudy Aroma - light grass Mouthfeel - creamy with a kick. Taste - different. Less IPA than would expect. Bitter aftertaste. The German hops must be milder. Used to more light and crisp but this is heavy and earthy. Overall - decent but not really great. Has the double IPA signature but the hops are just different. Missing the crispness I want.

Pours a cloudy yellow orange color with a grapefruit citrus aroma. Taste is of bitter malt that you would expect from an IPA. Its a clean bitter taste that lingers on the palate just to remind you of the German hops. Another good beer from Stone.

Hazy copper with thin head that fades quickly. Apricot, grapefruit, butter, pine on the nose. Orange cream and grassy bitter flavors up front fading into a long bitter floral finish. Oily/soapy mouthfeel with prickly carbonation that cuts through.

bottle. pours a clear copper with a lasting fat white head. smells of so much sugar, and some citrus hops. smells like a a fairgounds cotton candy stall. one of those i take a whiff of and think: "fuck, this is going to be a cloying motherfucker. i bet they packed it full of hops to seem balanced". well, not packed, but still too sweet. hop flavor tastes burnt on the finish. lemon hop notes don’t mesh with all the cotton candy flavors. overall this is a disappointment.

Generally a lover of all things Stone, I found this to be undrinkable. To my palate it tastes of phenols, bandaids, and Jägermeister.

UPDATED: SEP 5, 2013 Draught > Novare Res > Portland, ME. Wow, this is terrible. The flavors of the combination of grain and hops just don’t blend well.

Holy Hell, I have experienced some bad DIPA’s before, but this one is exceptionally bad.

Pours a clear gold color with a white head that fades to a ring within a minute. Aromas of hot, hot alcohol, pine trees and some citrus fruit. First sip reveals this to be brutally hot. So. Much. Alcohol burn. I almost can’t even take it... no, I can’t take it. I submit. Stone, you’ve won. You finally produced a beer that I can’t finish. This beer is garbage, and Stone should feel bad.

The worst part is, there will be people who rate this in January (when it’s a full 5 months old and 100% worse than it is now) and score it a 4.3. I feel sorry for those people. This is not a good beer, Stone is just mailing it in at this point.
This is a drain pour.
